IR illuminators

I just bought a ATN 390 it comes with a illuminator, I belive 450 mm what ever that means .

I saw an 850 mm for 200 bucks , and I was wondering if someone can recomend good one .

I think they make different kinds for different generations , but Im not sure .

dont want to drop 200 bucks and it doesent work .

Any ideas ? links? thanks

Its all French to me , I took your advice and bought a NV scope instead of the monocular rig 😉

This stuff is all new to me . This is the IR I was thinking about But I didnt have any idea if it would work or be worth it.

so your saying the milliwatts are more important than the nanometer, correct?

what range of nanometer works with the gen 1?

They are complimentary, both are important. You just cannot compare two device’s if you just know the mw output of one and the wavelength of the other.

No US companies sell IR laser’s to non law enforcement because they are regulated by the FDA (yes… food and drug…).

I wouldn’t bother with Da Torch. Get a Surefire 6P (or ones of its many cheaper clones)/Surefire G2 and an IR LED for 6p’s/G2’s and you’ll have something similar to “da Torch” for about $40-50.

A laser from the UK (I’ve purchased from Clive who owns NV Scope’s and he’s a little slow responding sometimes, but you get your stuff) would be my first choice, then the Surefire with aftermarket IR LED and then the Yukon illuminator (which is what I thought you meant from the original post) which is here –

and then “Da Torch”

Anything around 808nm is fine for Gen 1,2 and 3. I had a Surefire M1 which was invisible to all my Gen 1 stuff but worked great with Gen 2 and 3 and that was 880nm. I had a chart which showed which wavelength for which device’s.. I cannot find it, but its something like this –

low 800’s = Gen 1, 2 and 3

upper 800’s = Gen 2 and 3

low 900’s = Gen 3

(not saying that a Gen 2 cannot see a 910nm IR source, but it wont be as effective as one of the same power output in the upper 800’s)

It was 805nm not 850 , my mistake, its recomending them for gen 2

The ATN is marked 450mW (milliwatt) which is the power rating. Roughly tells you how bright it is. It’s generally accepted that the ATN 450mw doesnt actually output 450mW…. (I still think its plenty bright).

Whatever you saw marked as 850 was likely 850nm – (nanometer), which tells you the wavelength (‘color” of the light… 850nm is in the IR spectrum. The higher the number the less visible to the naked eye it is and the higher then gen you the device needed to see it. For example 850 give’s off a visible red glow from the element, 880 is a bit dimmer and wont work with Gen 1 very well.

The two value’s alone dont indicate which one is brighter/better, the 850nm could only be 100mW, and something marked 450mW could be on the outskirt’s of the detectable range of your device, if it ended up being 880nm then it wouldnt work with Gen 1 well as mentioned above.

850nm will work with any Generation of NV, the higher the wavelength the higher the Gen needed.

The 450mW ATN Illuminator is fine and I quite like them, I have had Laser Illuminator’s and didnt feel they offerend much more (other than risking damage) so another LED illuminator isnt going to offer that much more even if you get something in the optimum wavelength and a higher power.

For $200 I wouldnt bother. You can get a laser IR for about $130 from the UK – that is the only upgrade to the ATN 450mw I’d recommend.

With laser’s ignore the mw value when comparing them to an LED because its a different technology and you get more with less from a laser… So dont think the 100mw laser is dimmer than a 450mw ATN LED.
