Q:

ATN 390 Paladin review

well I got my NV scope today,so Ill give a short review :

Pros: not as big as I expected .

simple to mount but requires a 11mm to weaver adapter

clarity was very good

directions were easy to follow

thin crosshair , I expected a 2×4

cons:

no magnification whatsoever Its supposed to be a 4x but there wasnt any at all .

you have to jam your eye into the eye piece all the way ,

overall image was quite small , the rubber lens cap which is attached gets in the way of the top mounted illuminator So I had to stuff it underneath which will eventually rip it .

fish eye . very bad fish eye on a small image. all gen 1 has some fish eye , but I wasnt real happy with about this one

received it with dead battery’s installed, however there was an extra set

Over all it worked, I wasnt happy about the magnification or the image size

but the clarity in the center was pretty good I have plenty of reflected light so I didnt really need the illuminator , it was pretty strong and washed the image out .

I dont know if this is how the rest are or If I shoud send it back because there is no magnification .

I wont be able to call ATN until Monday I doubt anyone will be there tommorrow but Id like to ask them about the magnification.

I have the 390 and the mount was WAY off in parallel, so I had to remove the mount and re pin the mount strait. Very very bad way of hooking the mount to the scope. I do like it and works good for rats at night. Check and see if your scope mount is strait with the scope, I would bet it is not.

bump for review

Mine was definitely like the Yukon in terms of magnification

same as a 1x monocular.

I know 4x isnt very much but I looked through my 3×9 scope a tree on 3x and then later on with the NV scope and there was a major difference .

something is wrong with it for sure.

But I have to say the picture clarity was much better than I had expected .

I was expecting a much grainier picture and I wasnt expecting the range that it had , I was impressed with that .

It was not completely dark there was reflected light but I could see houses pretty clear at two hundred yards and wouldnt have trouble seeing a large dog

In a lot of ways it exceeded my expectation and needs .

the rear lens was only the size of a dime , so the image wasnt very big .

As long has the Spartan has some magnification Ill be happy , they appear to be basicly the same unit , So Im not really expecting anything extra .In fact, with some magnification, I would expect the picture to have a little more grain to it

I wont have it for a week or two because they have it back ordered

Ill post the review on the Spartan when I get it , see how it matches up .

Thanks for all the help .

The diopter adjustment is not magnification adjustment – It’s a fixed magnification device.

Diopter can most easily be described on a riflescope as for focusing the crosshair – once adjusted to give the clearest crosshair leave it alone. Front adjustment is for focusing on the target at different distance’s.

The diopter adjustment being out might explain your eye relief problem.

This is a 4x Paladin on left and a 2.5x Yukon on right showing difference in mag…. the Yukon didnt “feel” like it had any magnification.

Ok they said they will exchange it on Monday after the holiday Im going to up grade to a MK410 spartan and cross my fingers it works

YN , the diopter on the rear is the magnification while the ring on the front is the focus correct?

Just makeing sure I wasnt doing something wrong.

Because the rear ring on the rear will blur the image , but will not magnify it.

the front will focus .

but it will only focus at 1x there is no magnification whatsoever.

Ill let ya’s know if they stand behind thier products or not .

This was thier first email back:

Fred,
This is a brand new line and we just got the first shipment, I assure you this was not used. The fisheye you mention is very typical of Gen 1 units, all will have it at that price, that one of the main differences between Gen 1 and Gen 3. How did you test the magnification, it should have a 4x. If you can tell me how it’s broken we can go from there.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or need anything else.

So we’ll see what happens , it would be on Thanksgiveing great.

Holdover,

Now that’s fucked.

Hope it workds out for you.

I bought the unit from manventures outdoor , now when I looked at thier return policy it was almost impossible to return anything .

http://www.manventureoutpost.com/pages/New-Condition.html

All products must be in new, unopened condition in order to be returned. The following qualifies for new/unopened condition:

•A piece of clothing that still has the tags attached and/or has not been worn
•A item that has not been assembled
•An air gun that has not been cocked/fired

•An item with the factory seal intact
Examples of products that are not in new condition and will be refused:

•A boot with mud on it (has been worn outside)
•A riflescope that has been mounted
•An optic without the shrink-wrap around the original box
•Any blister-packed item that has been opened
•Any item with damage to the manufacturer packaging

they have no phone contact number .

I e mailed them last night , and they said they can assure me the unit was not previously bought even though it had finger prints on the lens and dead batteries installed. they made no mention of the magnification.

I emailed them just now and asked for a store credit and I will pay the difference and upgrade to a mk 410 .

Im waiting for thier response.

I e mailed atn and asked if it is common practice to ship thier units with dead batteries already installed and explained the magnification doesnt work at all. 0 nothing . same as a 1x monocular

Im waiting for thier response.

I feel I got ripped off here , So as long as they allow me to return it for a an upgrade I will be kool with that .

waiting for thier responses

The one I had didnt suffer from the mag or eye releif issue you seem to have. It had fisheye, but less than any other gen 1 I’ve used. I’d give them a call.

If you can, post a picture of the view through it….
