Q:

New 25 barrel arrives

Well the brown truck wound its way up my long driveway about 90 minutes before dark, and delivered my new barrel from RLAirguns.

The barrel, two tins of Kodiaks and paid freight was $217.00 but UPS sure took their time for a 61 year old kid and an early Christmas present.

I had the rifle all waiting with a new trigger mod and frame polishing so it was just prep the barrel and start shooting before it got too dark.

To all the advice I received from you folks, I did it like last time, sort of, I used a 22 Jag on a poly coated rod and bore guide. I used Goof OFF to clean the gunk out, and then did twenty strokes with JB and then cleaned again with Goof Off. I then polished the outside of the barrel from the front bushing towards the breech with 600 grit and lubed the barrel with silicone and the stub with divers grease. Then I put one patch thru with two drops of Breakfree in the center.

This barrel fits my breech very snuggly compared to my old 22 barrel.

I shot it at close range for two shots to get the elevation right. It was getting very dark when I shot the first group of three for a sight in. They measured just under 3/4 of an inch at 40 yards.

I made corrections and shot 5 shots, 4 were in one hole at a spot I could not see in the dark with out the aid of the Baraska on 12 power. The first shot went into the first pattern, obviously the windage had not taken hold on the adjustment. Right now the gun shoots about 1/2 inch left and 1/2 inch low, it was too dark to shoot any more.

The Air Hog fits fine on the 25 barrel and had been previously opend up, I blacked the brakes end to watch for clipping tomorrow when I go after it again.

I love that trigger mod I got off the reference section, it does require a drill press tho, so I got to use my new press again. It breaks clean with very little travel either way and holds fine.

First impressions of holding a 25 Kodiak for the first time with a 22 Exact 18 grain beside it , I coined an often used phrase from my wife, “its so beeg!.” 😯 😆 😆

Have you tried lubing the hammer with a dry teflon product? My Talon would throw one every once in a while and it turned out to be grit from silicone lube on the spring interfering.

I finally got a chance to shoot the gun at 100 yards today. A rare break in this storm we have been having on the west coast, it has not yeilded good shooting conditions until today.

I was using the Kings at 935fps, with the Condor hammer and weight, powerwheel maxed out. Shooting off my hood with a Caldwell range bag.

I would shoot three five shot groups and then refill from my pygmee bottle to 3000PSI.

It seems each time I would get a group of four that were hovering just at an inch and then a flyer that would take the group to 1.70 or so. Probably me, I am not one for bench resting, but could also be the scope.

I am still getting the slow adjustment issues with windage on my Baraska scope, and yes I tap the knobs with my Benchmade AFK, but that does not seem to help. Really frustrating it seems you just can’t get quality glass anymore for $57.00, what the fuck is the world coming too? 😆

For shits and grins, I put the last two groups up to the window to superinpose them over each other, they were shot at a circle I made with a sharpie using my turrent caps as a stencil on typing paper. Ten shot still went into that 1.70 inch group.

My Condor valve isn’t kicking these things out as fast as I would like, but it is at least shooting better.

Just messin’ with ya RC. The big slugs will be around for a long time, you need to get your baseline figured out first and then start all the fun over….

Jerry and Pab,

That is the plan, but with christmas, and having to get a new car and cash it out this month and the Shoebox, my fun funds are a little depleted.

Roachcreek

Pab is that a vision of Cory ?

Roach, you know the Kings and Kodiaks don’t fly anywhere near their best at those speeds!
You want mo’ power, you gotta up the weight, not the speed.
Get yourself some Surefire slugs.

30 yard group testing means nothing, unless all you do it shoot stuff at 30. Which you don’t.

Yeah, I’m happy it’s shooting accurately now but it seems an awful lot of work for a “Super 22.” I think you ought to just go for the power tune and start shooting 80gr slugs…but I’m a little biased!

now its time for the big boy bullets! big boy valve, hammer, spring.!

Where oh where is that 100 + foot pounds and accuracy!

You know your going to be casting for that .25 ???

I did some more adjusting with the rilfe this morning, namely setting the tophat at .07 and ran it over the box just to see the speed, nothing for strings yet. I also shot it again with and without the LDC.

It is doing 1050 or so with the 25.4 JSB Kings for 61 FPE, I would have liked more velocity and energy, but perhaps it is getting too close to supersonnic and is why the accuracy goes as the PW is turned up. That velocity BTW is exactly what I got with 22 caliber Monsters that are 25.4 grains, so going to a larger bore with a larger surface to push against resulted in the same performance as far as speed and energy goes. But then I also had the PW set at 10 and the tophat at 1.1 with the Monsters.

I also revisted the Kodiaks with this setting, they still hover around an inch at 30 yards.

The Airhog LDC was opened up earlier, but when I put it on there is a definate binding between barrel and frame, and then there is the accuracy difference. While POI and accuracy made no difference with the 22 barrel I had, on the 25 it is a major difference.

It is not the LDC that is the problem.

This is a result of the barrel not being centered in the frame. With my little cheap digital caliper, it is hard to measure, but when I insert feeler gauges into the gap between the tube and the outside of the barrel it is readily apparent.

When I was swapping the barrels, valves and scopes earlier in a failed attempt at getting the Kodiaks to shoot, the 25 barrel landed on a SS frame that my Airarcher had been on. Perhaps it is the bushings, perhaps it is the frame. I don’t know at this point. Luckily I have a 22 SS for when I need to be stealthy so the 25 will remain naked for now.

I have a suspicion it is the frame, I base this on the fact that bushings are turned on a lathe and from reading about the irregularities of Air Force frames, but you know the policemans’ defintion of suspicion, “mistrust based on little or no evidence.” So machinist chime in on this subject.

So that is where it is, scope is tracking correctly now, JSB Kings are going into 1/4 inch at 30 yards for 1050FPS/61FPE and it is naked and loud.

Roachcreek

‘Bout time old man.
Thought it was gonna end up as a plant support in your back garden… 😉 😆

Cool , glad you got er cookin RC

Switching the rings to the rear helped with the scope adjustments.

It seems to track better now.

More importantly, it is shooting 1/4 inch groups at 30 yards, whether it is three or five or ten shots, they go in the same hole with Kings.

It did not start out that way with Kings, and I went thru almost a 100 shots with them before I got it shooting any differnet than before.

Here is what it took, 110 gram subssonnic hammer, Condor hammer spacer and Condor spring, power wheel on 7-9. The power wheel was the last thing I tried on the Kings, the Kodiaks it did not do much, and frankly it was in desperation. Instantly they went to 1/4 inch. I pushed it up to 9-1, and they spread out to around 2/3 of an inch, and POI moved about 3/4 inch to the right, go figure.

It is still raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock, so I do not know how fast they are going because there is not enough light to chronograph them.

😆 So you know that little wheelie thing on the side of the frame 😆 .

Roachcreek

I just swithched the rings around, front to rear, to see if I can get it centered more horizontally.

Roachcreek

Jerry,

Your right on about that, I have been doing that for years, but this thing just takes it sweet time moving irregardless of my morse code on the turrents.
🙁
Roachcreek

I’ve seen even not so cheap scopes do this. I think it might be adjustments getting held up by lubricant in the internals, probably worse when cold. That’s just a theory, I really have no clue. I did find with one of my scopes that if I tapped on the turret with a pen or something that would send some vibration through the scope but not scratch or damage it, the number of shots to find the new POI was cut way down. Hey, it worked… 🙂
