Q:

Looking for the rigth lathe

Hey guys, I’m here hoping to get some help on chosing a lathe. Pretty much I need once that will handle every part of a full sized air rifle. I plan on making my own barrels, so deep hole drilling is a must.
Thanx alot guys hope to hear from you guys soon =)

I hate combo machines. They are like Enduro bikes, they do neither job well.

consider this machine to start out.

well I found a nice website where I can buy blank rifled barrels for good price.

then I can just machine those to fit my design.

as far as a lathe, I was thinking something like this. any input?

yup . get the biggest machine you can with the best low – hi speed . and well built . my lath goes down to 44rpm up to 1500 , which is good .
im not sure about drillin an making barrels , thats something you need to know well an expeiment lots . check out some of the single split end drills , they are fluted an pumped with coolent
youd want a coolent pump aswell but not sure yours would pump 2000psi . so expect to spend $4000+for a lathe then extra , maybe a good second hand one .
id highly sugest getting machanical tubing or machined tube or even hydraulic , im sure you can get a good size that could make your barrel . ive found its way easier to make a barrel an then make bullets to fit , then make a barrel to fit a bullet .

won’t be deep hole drilling on a lathe

Get a gunsmith lathe from Grizzly at a bare minimum.

But the biggest spindle and longest bed you can afford. Budget nearly as much for tooling

do a search for Bill Webb rifling machine and build that to do the deep hole drilling and rifling of barrels
