New Barrel For My .25 Matador
I noticed that Ed’s video, of the new gun that he is working on, has a .630″ OD barrel offered as an option. That gun isn’t for sale yet.
Since Ed won’t come out with anything new for me to spend my money on, I ordered a .619 OD, 23.8″ long, choked LW .25 cal barrel.
I put it on my long version .25. The stock barrel is .472″ OD and is pretty thin with a .250″ hole in it. I wanted to try a thicker barrel.
The new barrel wouldn’t fit in the stock barrel mounts so, I had Marmont Militia make me some new ones. He also made me a new end cap for the breech end of the moderator and a sleeve adaptor that allows me to use the stock moderator.
Here it is mounted on my Matador.
This morning I finished it up and there were 3 crows sitting in my back yard. They took off before I could get the gun pointed out of the kitchen window. 🙁
We got about 3″ of snow today and The Weather Channel said that the wind was 23 mph with gusts of 40 – 50 mph! I have a bird feeder/backstop at 25 yards. I kinda got the gun sighted in and then shot these groups, using a very shaky rest and having show blow thru the open window and landing on the scope lens and my glasses.
I did manage to head shoot 2 squirrels, they both did a wild break dance. I also got a double on 2 sparrows! Three shots, 4 kills. I couldn’t get any videos as the camera was freaking out trying to focus with all of the show flying. If you guys want a pic, I will have to dig them out of the snow tomorrow.
Next week, I hope to be able to go to an indoor 50 yard range and see what the new setup will do. I am impressed with the initial results! Stay tuned.

Gringoloco. I want to try Hart barrels in .22 rimfire and .243.
Right now, I have access to .22Rf solid lead bullets in 30, 42 and 45 grains. 1 in 16 twist will stabilize bullets up to 42 grains. I might have to go to 1 in 15 if I want to shoot the 45 grains. I am still looking for 35 and 40 grain bullets.
The bench rest match .22RF barrels are usually 1 in 16 twist. If they can’t get 5 shot 100 yard groups under 1/4″, they are pissed. They shoot sub sonic rounds at 950-1050fps. I know that my Matador will do that.
The .243 barrel I plan on trying 25.4 grain JSB diablo pellets in. The BSA barrels are .243 dia and don’t shoot too shabby.

For there velocities with the other barrels, isn´t better a softer twist like 1/18 or 1/20? more like in blackpowder?

I had Marmont make me a new breech end cap and the adaptor. I didn’t have to modify the shroud. I don’t know if it is any quieter but, it has a more “solid” sound when firing.
The larger barrel added some weight, I don’t care about that too much, I am looking for better accuracy. I won’t know if it shoots any better till I can go to the indoor 50 yard range.
The new parts allow me to buy other barrels and mount them on the Matador. Next up are 2 Hart barrels. One is in .223 with a 1 in 16 twist. I plan on trying .22 rimfire and cast bulets in it. The other Hart barrel will be a .243 1 in 16 twist that I want to try .25 cal JSB 25.4 grain pellets in.
I am not trying to second guess Ed but, I won’t know till I try! It’s only money.
I worked for Mitsubishi, in Blomington, for 8 years before I got laid off. Man, I was glad to get out of that place! That was a boss always over your shoulder meat grinder job! I guess all cars are built the came way, I wouldn’t buy a Mitsubishi though!

Did you have to modify the shroud a bit?
Any noticeable difference in sound modification?
That’s a sweet looking setup you have there. Marmet Militia does some pretty incredible work. Nothing seems much beyond his ability.
Incidentally, I worked in Bloomington for several years and went through Lincoln a lot. That was back when there was a GTE, long gone now. That flat corn country doesn’t slow wind or snow down much.

I want to thank Tedd for the opportunity to make his mounts. They were a fun and complex project that gave me a break from the E-TaCs.
I appreciate the kind words, although I wouldn’t give myself that much credit. I’m happy to be able to bring someone’s ideas/dreams to reality.
