Q:

My results with venting my Condor frame

I have a 24″ Condor in .22 using a .177 tank. I had a 13″ shroud and a vented front bushing made by a forum member (yel01z06). While it all did a fine job, I felt it could be a little quieter, especially since I am surrounded by homes.

There was room in the front bushing for me to drill 2 more holes and while I was at it I slightly flared both sides of the holes in the bushing with a larger bit.

I read all I could find about venting the frame on the forum and came to the conclusion that it was worth a shot. I drilled 3 small holes (using a bit just under 1/8″ using a nice vintage Miller’s Falls hand drill), under the grip area, in the channel of the frame. I kept it to three holes as I wanted to keep all the holes in frame under the grip AND over that large internal gap in the grip. I did not want to overdo it. I also lightly stuffed some stiff foam into the gap of the the grip, to calm the air down and to reduce any chance of me feeling the air on my hands or face. Before I put it all back together, I laid some tissue over the frame vent holes and dry fired the Condor upside down, the tissue puffed up nicely from the air leaving the frame, as was expected. To top it off, I put in a strip of stiff foam that I had left over into frame around the barrel, on both sides of the front bushing. Just a little, about half the volume of the space in the frame. Comments?

Put it all back together and I honestly have to say that it is quieter. Not massively quieter, but clearly quieter.

I want next to experiment with wrapping the shroud baffle chambers with a mix of wire mesh and some sort of stable fabric/foam. Comments?

Yup that’s the stuff!!!! Got some! I may try it!

Pass, he said it comes in three stages and its the fine one you want. one of the lads keeps fish so might go round to see them…….. 🙄

this type of thing http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/fishauction/20754-Sponge-Filter-3.html

quote tatsumi:

Anyone keep fish? Spoke to a guy today who uses the fine filter pads from tropical tanks with very good results so will be picking some up me thinks to try.

That blue foam stuff???

I’ve also spend many hours and tried different materials, give it a try 😉

this is what i have in the gunpower stealth’s silencer at the front chamber http://www.airgunforum.co.uk/forums/album.php?albumid=937

the top few photos. the front bushing is vented and inbetween the bushings i have a similar config of padding and a tube surrounding that to keep the gasses in. very quiet!

I have no doubt that any soft fabric will work to dampen the sound but in pretty sure that there are a lot better that scotch bright. its so porous and the fibers are so stiff it doesn’t seem to be able to absorb much energy. i think that the magic eraser would work wonders though since it is so dense and elastic. I’ll have to try that in my own silencer! 💡

i use scotch bright pads in all mine, works a treat 🙂

powderburner: Have shot up to just under 1100 fps and I could feel any annoying air from the grip area. I really think putting that foam in the gap of the grip took care of that.

Mrnewbie: That is a very interesting article indeed, I think I will try that. I do wonder if that Mr. Clean product will not disintegrate over time.

HUH, that’s an interesting idea , i have used the closed foam pipe insulation, and sheet felt from the fabric section of Walmart. When my son is shooting the condor and i am standing out in the yard working i can not here any of the things that are going on with the gun . like the slight tank noise and hammer noise . he shot into the backstop the other day and hit right into another hole and i didn’t even hear the pellet impact. i think you could have made the noise i heard by coughing slightly.

The closed foam from Lowe’s is the like the foam on a beer koozie. probly about the same as the foam they used . ?

my ldc has chamber s and the felt sheet rolled around the center veted sections , i think 6 sections

I tried this stuff, It does seem to help a little.

Interesting read!

Cool , glad it worked out for you, when your shooting at lower velocity you wont here much air escaping the forearm, but when you turn the gun up , you really start to hear the air coming from under the forearm, but this is very quite away from the gun, and the down range noise is much less i found with the frame vented.

I’ve seen a lot of videos on youtube for silencers sold in the UK for airguns and almost all of them have some sort of dense felt to absorb the sound. since it seems to be so prevalent it has to work. look through some of the videos by gunvidder

most of the moderators he uses have some sort of fabric to muffle it as well as baffles and cones.
I also know that Edgun vents the rear of their moderator. supposedly the pellet is more accurate since the “dirty air” let out by the high pressure air behind the pellet escapes through these and the pellet leaves the shroud in a “vacume?” i’m not sure about the vacume part but letting that air out through the small holes lessens the amount let out the muzzle as a report so i applaud you at you use of ingenuity! :thumb:
