Kodiak Velocity in 22
I have been screwing around with my top hat and think I finally have it good. I am getting 22 cal Kodiak’s (21.14) to average at about 820 fps out of an 18 inch barrel. Any thoughts on ideal velocity for long range?
Thanks in advance!!

Yeah, that is a personal question isn’t it. 😛
It is a 24″, I have not been able to get any slug driven at maximum to give me any kind of accuracy, but the kings at just around 1000FPS are phenominal.
I have tired a myriad of hammer and spring and breech combo’s, and stock was the best.

Wow Roachcreek,
That group is impressive enough to give me the .25 bug! I did do the trigger mod, but the glass I am using is one of the higher end leapers scopes. I like leupold on my powder guns and am starting to understand why you guys all go with really good scopes on air rifles.
Just what I need, another thing to obsess over (according to my wife) .25 barrel and a nightforce scope on my “bb gun” 😈
If you don’t mind my asking what kind of barrel length do you hae on that .25?
This is my .25 @ 100 yards.

You can see how the variable wind pushed them horizontally, but vertically they were not doing too bad. Remember I was holding 1.5 mildots for the wind.
Velocity to do this with Kings runs from 950 to 1030 or so.
Better glass and a trigger mod really helped my 100 yard groups also that magic spot seems to be a lower pressure than I would have thought.

I read a post on the yella about the .25 25.4 gr JSB’s and the BC getting better at 200 yards vs 100 yards.
I would ask Adam, as I think his set up MIGHT be close to what you have. The only thing I can think of is a 24″ barrel.
I use chairgun and have no problem getting shots to hit where they are supposed to, I was looking to tighten up the groups a little.
I don’t think I can squeeze another 100 fps out of the gun unless I try the valve mod.
The heavier pellet thing is coming from my powderburner experience. The 168 grain Sierra’s I load for my .308 are more stable at longer range than 110-130 grain varmint bullets. They shoot flat but go everywhere in the wind. But on the other end too heavy and you are dropping like a rock. I was just assuming it might apply to pellets also. (But we all know what assuming leads to) 🙄 My long distance airgun shooting is limited. I am learning slowly but surely.
My velocity is 820-840 with the kodiaks, can a stock talon with 18 inch barrel do more? I have the tophat at .105 and that is where I am getting max velocity with a decent shot count.

This is 5 shots at 102 yards according to bushnell- calm day with the JSB’s. The kodiaks open the group by about 6-7 more inches.
I appreciate the input from all! Thanks.
Keep it under the speed of sound (1130 at 70F) and you should be good to go in any caliber.
If heavier is better, why aren’t the .25 caliber shooters posting 125 yard groups? Instead, some are giving up velocity in favor of accuracy at less than 100 yards.
Can you add another 100 FPS and try again?
Download Chairgun for free and start playing with pellets at different velocities. You can ask the software to optimize your point blank or sight zenith range.
Or buy a 17 HMR and nail anything inside 150 yards with a MPBR of 1.5″… http://www.chuckhawks.com/17HMR.htm
I might be asking for too much, the JSB’s are really good and maybe thats as good as it will get. The days I get with no breeze are few and far between, I thought a heavier pellet might work a little better.
I’ve heard reports of Kod’s getting open at the longer ranges. Also have heard many reports of how JSB holds it together a little better. I think that was the .25 cals though.
SHould have clarified- long range being around 100 yds. JSB’s hold about 3 inches at 850 fps for me, but the Kodiaks just go all over the place. Maybe my gun just doesn’t like em, but I was hoping to get a little more whop and a more stable flight with the heavier pellet in the Kodiak.
I read on here somewhere about slowing down the kodiaks for better groups, just didn’t know how much.
Pigeon, you are smokin those polymags out at 1050. Have you shot any groups at distance?
I just got my 16.2 grain Predators to go 1020 fps ( average ) out of an 18″bbl. Perfect for hunting feathered targets.
