6 rings from a Marauder
Roy Weeks bought some 6 rings last week to try in his Marauder. He’s tuned it a bit and done some experimenting with high power. I was very interested to see how the 6 rings would do from this gun even though it does not put out the raw power that some of the condors do.

Timmy is casting an order right now. Our customer has asked that a 100 of the slugs be colored red. The slugs are coming out like little bits of chrome, that will make a wonderful base for the translucent coating. Because of the chemicals involved, I usually do the coatings myself. I sure hope I don’t mess up those perfect slugs!

i’m going to have to start hunting so I have a need, I don’t feel right just shooting them into a backstop, they deserve to be fed real meat!
Oh, I forgot to mention that he says the slugs are 61.89 gr. I think that’s a mistake based on how Timmy labled the bag. For match grade, the maximum deviation in pellet weight is 0.4gr (plus or minus .2 from the average). Timmy usually beats that by a good bit and he intended to indicate that all the slugs in the bag were either 61.8 or 61.9gr (yes, every slug has been examined for defects, weighed and binned according to weight).

I wouldn’t advertise that exact number without some follow-up tests to get a reasonable average but the average number can’t be that far off.
Synopsis,
If the initial velocity of the 6 rings were higher, you could expect a lower percentage of retained energy. That would be the same for the JSB or any pellet because drag and thus deceleration is not a linear function. What would be pretty consistent though, is that the percentage retained by the slug would be higher than the pellet, purely because it has a higher BC. In addition to more retained energy, the great thing about a higher BC is that it reflects a slug that does not drift as much with the wind.
Wind drift is related to the difference in time it would take a projectile to travel a distance in a vacuum and the time it takes in air…. not to the total time. So, a slug, less affected by air (higher BC) will drift less than a pellet, even though the pellet spends less time in flight.
According to chairgun with a calculated bc of .0815 from his numbers with the mv of 700fps / 67fpe at 50 yards you have 57fpe 😯 Shaw boing!!!!
Yeah, had a feeling it was apples and oranges. I wasn’t trying to trash the report, I found it very interesting as well as informative. You should have heard me cheer when he did the accuracy part. 😉
The fpe for the slugs just appeared low, maybe another interesting test would be to get the muzzle velocities the same for each pellet and see what the energies are then! I guess that is what I am used to seeing. Like you said one would typically try to get the best velocity for accuracy with some adjustments.
Do you think that if the velocity was higher it would retain any more energy or is it pretty much a consistent % that is retained regardless of velocity?
I would suspect that only little changes were made to the rifle and the slugs were under powered so the pellets weren’t shooting at over 1300fps. After all I don’t think the Maud has a power wheel… 😆
Either way that is still some serious energy retention AND accuracy.
Have you considered having PA or other retailers sell them? The .25 caliber market is growing and those slugs honestly have no equal on the market. 😀

I think the point Roy was making was about the higher BC of the slugs already being significant at 30 yards.
The relevent math is that at 30 yards the 6 rings retained 87.4% of their muzzle energy while the JSBs only retained 78.4% of their muzzle energy. The faster JSB slows down faster. Another way of looking at it would be to note that the 6 ring started with 19.2 FPE more and at 30 yards, finished with 21.3 FPE more than the JSB.
I have no idea if the gun settings were changed between shooting the JSB at 940.9 and the 6 ring at 709 (muzzle velocity). It’s not really relevant though because one would expect to make adjustments if they improved the performance of the bullet.

I get 905 with jsb’s for a few shots on my maxed out marauder. I also overfill a couple hundred psi to keep the shot count up. Jerry if you pm information I will order some of those. money order if I remeber correctly right? Looks like fox medicine to me!

Interesting for the loss of fps the fpe lost doesn’t seem right.
The 6 ring slugs were 62 grains and carried 60 fpe at the target.
The pellets were 25 grains and still had 40 fpe at the target.
The smaller pellets were less than half the weight but retained nearly 75% of the fpe of the slugs at the target…
From the fps lost on the pellets I would have figured the fpe would have been less…
I guess it’s because the gun was probably set to not send the lighter pellets beyond the sos and so the power of the slug is actually on the low side because of the reduced velocity?
The slugs as usual are a thing of beauty!!! 😉

Sorry, didn’t mean to ignore your question about marketing through PA…
A couple years ago Gary called PA about marketing the Barnes Raptors through them. The intent was that making the Raptors a commercial slug would generate enough business to keep my boys busy between orders from Barnes owners for the proprietary and limited distribution slugs. This was actually before I asked Gary to design a .25 slug to serve the same purpose but serving the high power (Condor) .25 market.
PA pretty much treated Gary like shit and never returned the call after a couple tries. Shortly after we tried to start a dialog, PA started selling swaged slugs for the bigger bores (and those have turned out to be crap). Originally, I thought it might be to our advantage to have PA do the marketing and shipping but now I realize that is not true. The market for specialty slugs is small enough that customers seek out the best source and there is no reason to give PA a pass through cut (that either reduces profit or raises the price..or both). Not to mention that I’m not going to do business with a company or person that doesn’t show some respect and simple courtesy.
For the .25s where the sizing is critical to performance in a given barrel type, there’s no way I’d trust PA to speak on my behalf. They might do great but they might just F it up and the result would be held against me or Gary… Besides, between match grade, 6 sizes for the .45s, 3 sizes for the .25s and multiple color options… we could not stock every option for someone at PA to pull off a shelf, we’d have to cut back to a few generic choices and that would hurt quality.
