delrin finishing
just for you guys who cant stand the cheesy grips/ trigger shoe on our stock AF rifles, i was surprised to find out that with a lot of elbow grease, they can all be polished and refined to various degrees, much to aesthetic benefit. i have my grips sanded to a clean flat black finish using up to 00 equivalent scuff pad, and my trigger shoe has a 2000 grit polish now, and i can literally see my reflection in it. i know this all seems kinda dumb, but i was shocked at the ability of delrin to take such a polish… 😯

I bought the rifle used from a guy in Maine. Those were decals, and an unfortunate acetone incident forced me to remove them.
I kinda doubt Ill be parting with the grip anytime soon. 😉
“airforce sniper”? is that frame refinished? thats pretty slick. im a dremel guy myself, most of my money goes into the gun, not much left for tools. everything happens the slow and hard way at my house. that grip would fit me so well, lemme know if you ever wanna part with it… 😀
I made it myself. I mentioned it because it lends itself to the shooting style you described very well.
Laminated some thin sheets of plywood together with wood glue and clamps. I had rough-cut the patterns with a scroll-saw before gluing.
I have some carbon tubes, about 3/8″ diameter and a 10/32 bolt fits perfectly inside them. So I cut some pieces to length, and bonded them into the middle laminate. Worked out pretty nice, grip bolts to frame very snug and solid.
It was a fulll length stock at first, but the rear half turned out to be unnecessary and too heavy so I cut if off.
All the shaping was done with a dremel and small drum sanders LOL. Plywood is a bitch to form by hand.
The real reason I love this grip, I managed to get the fit to my right hand perfect. For a first effort, it really worked far beyond expectations.

Odd thing happened, I cant bear to take it off the rifle now. I like it better than the all metal/plastic version on my sig pic.

i dunno what to say. id like to hate it cause you said “plywood”, but carbon tubes? and she is just perrrty…whered you get it? or is it a riffraff original? thats just awesome, man…. 😯 😎
Another cheap and effective grip treatment is to cut a 3″ or 4″ length from a bicycle inner-tube, turn it inside out and slip it over the grip. It is soft, won’t slip/shift and maintains a decent ‘tacky’ surface even when wet. Works wonders on a Glock and is completely reversible.
Well to tell the truth, I wish I could make this grip out of carbon.

by the way, my rear grip is just the stock one, sanded to a matte finish, wrapped in a bunch of electrical tape to make it fit me better, and covered with an uncle mikes small style pistol grip cover…
yes, my proverbial knob was getting rather sore(i guess CLP isnt really an all purpose lubricant… 😯 ). really, i just wanted to do away with the mold seams and that has made all the aesthetic difference. as for the finish, i actually hold the rifle behind the grip, in front of the trigger guard, i prefer a front heavy feel, i guess.if i could make a secondary front grip to make that fit my left hand more comfortably, itd be awesome. the front grip is almost purely aesthetic as far as im concerned. and for the record, i will NEVER put anything wood on my gun, i just dont like it 👿 . the material they make the stock grips with will survive a thermonuclear war. i am definitely a synthetic kind of guy, the grips are just poorly finished from the factory, making them look like shit. 😥 (by the way, that opinion of mine holds true for wood/laminate stocks as well. ive seen many pretty rifles with them, but mine wont be one of them.)
He was looking for something to polish to a bright shine and his “knob” was getting blistered… 😆
Put all that energy to a good use and buy some wood and make a REAL grip. 😉

On a more serous note I don’t think the grips are actually delrin (HDPE), they are some other type of plastic that is a bit harder… 😎
just a question…how come you prefer a “smooth” finish on your grip?
i prefer my grips to be rough for better grip. in fact, i installed scotch “NON-slip” strips on my rifles grips in order to grip them better…
