Q:

Pellet re-sizing, of a sort–

Due to my stupidity, I ordered some wrong pellets…What I got are the H&N Baracuda 10.2 pellets…(the ones that the tin tine is marked wrong and says weight is 10.65) They were grouping at like 2-3 inches at 25 yards 😯 😯 which REALLY BAD….
So, remembering something I’d read a while back, I took 50 of them in a pellet tin, along with the 2 foam rubber peices ( that come in pellet tins) oiled up with some oil I got from AirGunSmith. Put the lid on and rolled ’em around for a couple of minutes…….after 3-4 pellets the group sizes went down to dime size, at the same 25 yards. I didn’t change the Power Wheel, I didn’t change the fill pressure……ONLY thing I did was oil the pellets 😎 I don’t know if the oil film (very light!!!) helped them be just a RCH bigger, or if it was the reduction of friction ??? And I really don’t care..Those pellets now shoot as accurate as the 10.2 Baracuda Match pellets…which are the most accurate I’ve found!!!!
I know this topic has been discussed at length…so just consider this as a reminder…it sure worked for me!! Only down side is that now the red rubber tip on the safety is kinda dirty grey 🙄 small price to pay.

😆 , I left my coffee cup on the front bumper of my truck and drove off.$##$%&( ,,, 😥

We all make mistakes… like leaving some sunglasses at a restaurant… cost me more than $10 🙁

I agree..that it is a tin by tin thing…I’m also going to try these same pellets but in a larger head size..although my gun has always shot much more accurately with the 4.50mm head……bottom line though .it’s MY FAULT for ordering the wrong pellets to begin with 😥 😥 😥

😆 Pacrat i think that you just have to try it with each combo, i have had pellets that went to crap with added oil, and some that tightened right up with the added oil on the pellets , direct like that.

Packrat,

Back in the day when I was in the Navy we were issued 1911’s for a Watch/Duty sidearm. These were notorious for having tired, worn barrels and many sailors would dip their USGI Ball ammo in grease to get a better seal and a few more fps.

i’m inclined to believe that pellet quality could be a major suspect in poor accuracy/performance in air guns. i can see why .177 caliber pellets might be hard to deal with on a “precision” production operation basis. they are rather small.

yesterday, i was shooting my Beeman R10 utilizing RWS superdome pellets. performanc/accuracy didn’t seem too bad but it seemed as though there were more “flyers” than one should expect from a rifle and pellet combination as quality as these two. the pellets fit into the breech quite easily, with little to no resistance.i inserted a pellet, left the barrel in the cocking (opened) position and held the muzzle skyward…lo and behold…i could see a “circle of light” between the pellet and the bore. (i could see where the pellet was contacting the lands, though)

no wonder there was an issue…

needless to say, i discontinued using those pellets.

i checked my .20 Beeman RX the same way using cylinder pellets as i shoot them and experience, what seems to be, a lot of ‘flyers’ with it too…same results…

i’ve ordered up some different pellets to remedy…(I hope so anyway.)

ssshooter…I THOUGHT I had ordered the “MATCH” pellets, but somehow I didn’t 🙁 🙁 PA states in the specs for those pellets that the tin is incorrectly marked, and that the pellets are actually 10.20…
The 10.20 “match” pellets are the most accurate in my TSS…somehow I ordered wrong ones..but the light lube took care of it just fine…that was my point .

😆 😆 YOU STILL HAVE THE SAFETY! 😆 😆 just kidding, but i did away with mine before i ever saw the TAG… hated that damn thing….

I think that pellets are something we take for granted. Without measuring, or weighing them, they all look good. I wonder sometimes if the poor performance that a guy reports from an airgun that should be shooting very well isn’t from the pellets and not his expensive airgun, or his shooting skills. It never occured to me to mic the pellet’s head and sort by a specific diameter, but that’s exactly what guys are doing who are recording great accuracy. Most of my shooting doesn’t require such precision. The rats and ground squirrels aren’t the least bit picky about where that .25 Predator, or Modified Crow Magnum hits them. 😉

I only buy the MATCH version of that pellet. Kodiak or H&N 177 and they have the same measurement. The kicker is 10.65gn is a lie. I have pellets from 3 years ago that are all 10.2 🙁

BUT the match pellets have a better shape and dimensions… if you hand sort them you can get match performance. But life is too short 🙂
