CROSMODS Disco .22 (full story w/pics and video)

The BENJAMIN DISCOVERY .22:

The Discovery is my 2nd venture since being an adult into the CROSMAN/BENJAMIN family of airguns. I also own a very sweet little Crosman 2240 that’s all tricked out. I haven’t owned a Crosman or Benjamin before that since i was in my early teens. I’ve since moved up to higher dollar adult airguns of all types and name brands. The 2 guns from my childhood that i most remember are my uncles all steel and real wood Crosman 760 Pump Master and my very first Benjamin/Sheridan 392. What great guns they were. I never would have thought in all my early years that when I was 41 years old, i would own some type of Crosman and Benjamin..lol

Since getting older and purchasing the higher dollar adult airguns, i’ve always thought to myself, why not own another Crosman or Benjamin. But i did not want a pump pneumatic. PCP’s and Springers and CO2 guns have spoiled me. Enter now, the current line of PCP guns from the Crosman/Benjamin family. What i was currently looking for was a “Project” gun in .22. I did not want to spend necessarily a lot of money on the gun itself but, i new i wanted to do an expensive “UPGRADE” to whatever i bought. I’ve actually wanted a project gun for some years and although all my guns become projects, i wanted something i could TOTALLY transform.

Enter CROSMODS. After reviewing the YELLOW FORUM i saw a gents post about his new 22xx pistol that he totally tricked out. I was in awe at the transformation that the parts from CROSMODS made to the gun. It was exactly what i wanted. But, i did not wanna do another 22xx pistol, i already had one. I wanted different. So after a quick visit to CROSMODS website, i quickly found out that they also did parts for the Benjamin Discovery. WOOOOHOOOO i thought, there it all is….MY NEW PROJECT GUN. What it is for me also is working with my hands assembling parts and tuning as i go along then making any needed changes down the line. That excites me. And these parts would provide that excitement.

After doing a ton of research and asking a ton of questions to CROSMODS, i decided on getting the receiver and trigger assembly anodized BLUE, getting all other parts BLACK and i wanted the shroud in BLACK too but, i wanted the shroud that came with the CAMO pattern designed into it. CROSMODS can anodize in most basic colors as well as custom colors so the options seem to be only limited by your imagination.

My ideas for the gun: 1st: CROSMODS Parts (all about the look). 2nd: Use stock 24″ barrel to see just how accurate i can get it to shoot but leave the idea of cutting the barrel down 4″ (20″ AOL) and buying baffle later OPEN. 3rd: Tune and set the INITIAL velocity to 880 fps with JSB 18.1 gr Jumbos. 880 FPS is a number that i am toying with right now as its something to do with subsonic/transonic speeds affecting BC. But that is something i don’t wanna discuss yet.

Lets now take a pictorial look at the Benjamin Disco even though i know you all know what it looks like. Its pics like these that reminds me of why i call in sick the day i know my gun is being delivered…lol:

After, unpacking the gun, i was very happy with what i was holding. It was light as all get out. I thought my Logun Solo was a light gun but man does this rifle take the cake. The guns bluing on the barrel and the airtube was very nicely done. The Disco was also slim and shouldered effortlessly, and it had a great balance to me. I even liked the fiber optic sights and kinda wished i had more time to shoot with them. To any newbie or old timer that has never owned or held a Disco, this gun would be a great all arounder just the way it comes from the factory. Heck, i should buy another just to keep it stock….lol. Not rushing the story but, there is nothing more to tell about the new gun cause the point of it was not for me to shoot it stock and report on it, the purpose of it all was to strip it down and transform it then report. 😆

Before we get to the transformation, lets look at some numbers from the stock Benjamin Disco:
Barrel – 24″ rifled steel/.22 cal
OAL – 39 1/2″
Weight – 5 lbs, 0.7 ounces (empty) / 5 lbs, 1.4 ounces (2000 psi fill)
Trigger pull weight over 3 pulls – 3 lbs 8 ounces average

25 shot string using 14.3 gr JSB Express pellets (2000 psi fill):

CROSMODS:

So now after going through all the stock numbers, i could not wait to unbox the CROSMODS parts. I will keep this section of words short and just say that, they were as nice as i expected them to be. CROSMODS uses CNC machinery to make their parts and it shows. Let’s take a look at some pics:

For the power plant and heart of the gun, i choose this:

I purchased a Simmons 44 mag scope which has a side focus knob with mil dots and a 44mm objective. To mount that scope i choose these:

After assembling the gun with all the CROSMODS parts, all i could do was smile at the overall look and feel of the gun. If you guys thought i was as happy as a kid in the candy store when i received the Disco, i was now 5 times happier. The weight and balance of the gun was near the likeness of the stock gun but different. In a good way though. With the addition of all the parts and the scope and rings, the gun might have gained an additional pound or so.

Lets look at what also went into the gun:
New mainspring (still toying with ideas, need more testing)
All new VITON o-rings throughout entire gun
24″ stock bbl inspected and hand lapped the bore with JB bore paste
Blue lock tite on all screws and bolts

Lets look at the overall numbers from the finished CROSMODS Disco .22:
OAL – 40″ with stock adjusted to my liking – a 1″ increase
Weight – 7 lbs, 8 ounces with scope – a guestimated gain of 1+ pound
Trigger pull – 2 lbs, 5 ounce (settings from Crosmods), – decrease/1 lb 3 oz

10 shot string from a 2000 psi fill using 18.1 gr JSB Jumbos:
1-874.6 fps 6-889.4
2-879.1 7-887.6
3-880.1 8-880.6

That’s an average of 881 FPS/31.19 FPE
I then took a couple more shots over the Chrony with the numbers steadily going down and by then, i was in the 860 ish FPS range. Now remember, this is the beginning stages of the testing of the gun and nothing so far about the power and accuracy are etched in concrete. To get more shots, i could do a few different things but, if that comes to light, then i will go into detail about that then. Right now, i will stay there to test for field performance.
