Condor – Silent trap (modified) for this airgun
I have read not to use a Silent Trap with a Condor, due to the extra FPE this airgun produces. Here is my modified Silent Trap, which uses a Breaker Box, 2″ of Dust seal, 4 bolts, 4 springs and about a 1/4 inch of steel sheet metal. 2 sheets of 22 or 24 gauge steel will not stop 28 FPE on it’s own (at 10 yds). The key is the shock absorbing capability of the duct seal to disperse enough energy to give time for the springs to react , which takes up the additional FPE.

Knowing my luck i’d send one through the backing from missing the thickened areas.
Too bad the duct seal is so damned heavy, probably costs more to ship than the price of the bar. 😡
I took the 25 out to the range a few weeks ago and did some 30 and 50 yard testing. Damned things retain some serious energy at 50 yards and I was only using 30 grains pellets. 😯
I like everything about the bigger caliber, except I only have a hand pump to fill my tanks… 🙁
the targets i use , see in the pic , there are 5 targets in a row, with 4 rows, i have since filled in the centers of each row, at the time that is all the duct seal i had . 🙂

Works fine all year long for me. But then again I am in So Cal and weather is awesome even in the winter 😀
i have one like this in the house for hand gun mostly, but i do turn the condor down in the 500’s or so and practice off hand , and shoot other air guns into it, when weather is not good out side. it has a piece of steel in the back of the duct seal so it will stop anything i shoot into it.
and i built this when i first bought the condor, or rather after i tore up everything that i was shooting the condor into 🙂
it stays outside all year around and i have a small light in it, so i can shoot at night, the rain does not get in it, but the duct seal is waterproof, and it just gets harder in the cold, and softer in the warm weather.so it should not hurt it in anyway to leave your back stop out side. you could add a rain shield on to the top to keep water off your targets, mine will stay good so i don’t have to put new targets up each time i want to shoot.
Having only 1 outdoor silent trap that I only use in the Spring/summer time, I can tell you I go through 2″x6″ boards at 30yds like crazy. The Condors just beat the crap out of them and pellets start going through very quickly, even after shooting at different parts of the wood. They don’t last long at all. Maybe 100 shots at the most and there are splinters everywhere. They are cheap though, because I get leftovers or “defective” ones (I can’t tell if they are) at Home Depot for .99c to $1.29 for a 6ft long 2″x6″ board, but I have to keep going back for more and then I have to cut them into smaller sections. I don’t mind that too much but they are very noisy when the pellet strikes. The whole neighborhood can hear the impact, so I am going to get another breaker box and try to squeeze in about 4.5-5″ of duct seal. That should last for a couple of years.
Adam or anyone, how does the duct seal hold up in the winter and in the rain? Does it lose any of its properties? I usually bring it before it rains and during the winter. I am thinking maybe I can leave it out all year long? I am also afraid the breaker box might start rusting, although it’s supposed to be for outdoors. I normally use big fat logs during the colder months and for all year-round shooting.
My Trap has been sitting in the back yard for 5 years and has over 1000 shots in it. All I have ever done is smash another bar in the center and kept going.
Can you imagine what an expensive wood trap would look like by now? 🙄

That’s surprising since my Benjamin Trail NP XL 1100 .22 caliber (gas ram – rated at 28 FPE muzzle) at 10 yds will penetrate 1 3/4″ to 2″ on this trap, with domed pellets of 18.1 gr.
I odn’t have my Condor yet, but was anticipating needing more stopping power.
Just reporting my experience. I should add, I used hollow points (predator, ultramag).

Yep, in a couple of days it will be 5yrs you set yours up! I almost got the air duct seal tubs too the 1st time I went to Home Depot. Like you I asked someone that works there, and they took me straight to the “air” duct seal tubs that were sitting on the floor. But I knew I was supposed to get 1lb bricks, so when I mentioned electrical putty, he called over a guy from the electrical dept. who knew exactly what I was looking for. They only had a case of 10 bricks so I emptied out their inventory in one transaction 😆 The lady at the register was scanning the barcode on the outside of the box case as 1 item, but it wasn’t going through, so I reluctantly pointed out that she had to scan the individual bricks 😛 Too bad they don’t sell a case of the stuff at a discounted price.

Looks like your going to be shooting a 25 caliber master blaster… I hit my housing the other day and the 30 grain slug bent the shit out the the gray steel tab on my breaker box. The 25 doesn’t mess around. 😯
I have been posting about my “silent trap” using a large electrical breakout box for 3-4yrs now, on different forums, so this is nothing new.
2″ of duct seal will not hold a pellet back shot from a Condor if you happen to shoot in the same spot a few times. It will easily go through. Speaking from experience, once the pellet goes through the duct seal, it will no longer be a “silent” trap. The pellet hitting the steel backside of the box even after it goes through the duct seal makes a hek of a noise.
What I use is an 8″x10″x4″ breakout box from Home Depot. It is 4″ deep and you can pile a good amount of duct seal in it to stop anything the Condor throws at it, but they will start going through after a few hundred shots, once pellets start hitting the same spot… but it will take a while.
So I only use the breakout box for my Springers now and only keep the duct seal about 2;5″ thick and thousands of shots later it still works well.
What I did do for my Condors, was to build large “ball” of duct seal 6-7″ in diameter. It took about 12 1-lb bricks of duct seal I think. After much shooting & rotating it, pellets finally starting going through it a couple of weeks ago after almost 3yrs. I have put way over >1,000 shots through this big “block” of duct seal at close range. Almost the entire surface all around has been shot over and over a few dozen times, and I was careful rotating it very frequently.
So this is your best bet. It lasted about 3yrs for me and close to 1,200 shots. Most of them were .25’s with 60-85+fpe. The duct seal ball (which becomes rectangular/square after a short while from rotating it) ended up weighing almost twice as much during that time because of the several tins of pellets that it has inside it. 7″ is also not bad for hanging paper on it and shoot some groups, but I mainly use it to Chrony my 3 Condors & all my Springers & CO2’s, and I do that frequently – with every high-pressure fill and every shooting (Springer) session.
2″ will NOT last long at all if you shoot a Condor. The thick gauge steel behind it will stop the pellets, nut not without some noise. At least the one I got has pretty thick steel. It weighed a lot before I added any duct seal to it. I would guess around 5lbs “empty”. Now it is easily 15+lbs 🙂

😀 , this is true, the camo trap i built will take 22 long rifle with the duct seal trap pulled out , and i reinforced the back of the duck seal plate to handle 32 grain eunjin’s at 1000 fps, they were denting the metal back plate of the duct seal tray pretty bad, so i added steel, now 5 or 6 32 grain in a 3/8″ group does nothing to the back plate behind the duct seal.
I originally was going to pull the duct seal tray and shoot into the rubber mulch behind the duct seal tray with the heavy 80 foot pound condor set up, but i just fixed the duct seal tray to handle it, any thing more than around 80 foot pounds and i can pull the duct seal tray and use the slanted metal trap with rubber mulch behind the duct seal slide in tray to shoot into, the mulch is silent to shoot into also.
i built the trap with the recessed target area to quieten the impact of the pellet hitting the paper target, it works great,
