Q:

how fast is too fast in .177 ?

i swapped barrels in my talon today and the 18 inch .177 is spitting kodiaks at 1017 fps pw 3/4. i went to nil on the pw and the vel dropped to 885 fps. what is the ideal speed for these mini pills ? i would try and get it to 900 fps though.

the fill pressure was 2600 psi as per the hill pump gauge. earlier it was giving me 975 fps with the same setting. is altitude change a factor as i am now at 3000 ft asl and was ealier at a coastal area.

My Talon is fine even on higher PW settings… The 22 Condor is a different story. Of course each gun is different… maybe mine is behaving off spec. PW 0.8 and I get 1080fps with an 18gn pellet…. this is bone stock out of the box.

i have the stock talon valve and hammer. i did not note the vibration effect u spoke of in this talon even with pw at 8/10 or at 7/10. the pellets were grouping well till 50 yds and i think i will leave the pw setting as is .

I’ve noticed that high PW settings cause a heavier trigger and more vibration with a Condor hammer. So, the logic goes, accuracy may suffer due to a heavy hammer strike even before the pellet leaves the barrel.

too fast for any pellet is the point where accuracy goes out the window. mv in the 900’s shouldn’t be a problem, if you’re using a chrony start with the pw at 0 and adjust it a little at a tiime until you reach the mv you want or your groups start to open up, whichever comes first. when your groups open up, back your pw down to the previos setting and leave it there. that will be the highest mv for that pellet. as for your other question, yes, altitude is a factor. the air is thinner at 3000 ft. therefore there is less drag and the mv will increase. hope this was helpful 😀
