Q:

Attention guru’s, bell curve?

I’ve started shooting .22 from my AAA Condor with a standard flow valve worked over by Tony. I want to get it dialed in with a nice bell curve to shoot out to 100 yrds with a decent shot count. I have a 60 shot string to look at for any suggestions on my next step to my goal.

I went to .22 for more economical paper punching. This fall the .25 will be utilized for squirrels and such. That gives me 50> 100 fpe. The squirrels have been thinned out a little to much right now. 🙄

For 50 yards a 30fps spread should get you minute of a squirrel accuracy.

Marc i don’t have a problem at all getting a curve.i have set up for a full cuve and shot count , but mostly i set up for around a 30 shot string , 15 in front of peak ,15 over the peak.for less impact variation. 🙂

Getting a real bellcurve with a AF gun is nearly impossible. The valve is very depending on backpressure in the breech. Because of that shots in the upward ramp off the bellcurve tend to be pretty irratic and not really usable! Your string seams pretty decent!

Cheers,

Marc

Sounds great man, just put air in and have fun, and figure it out along the way. 😀

Thanks PB, I’m in tune with what you are saying. I will start with fill pressure first. Today I shot 10 shots in one group starting pressure 2650, 40 yrds, off bi-pod, .574 c-c, 9 of which were .483 c-c. For me, that is outstanding. 😀 That bracket seems too work good for me.

I’m very appreciative of knowledge that I can under stand, so thanks again. Dion

Ok , well as far as tony , he is the best from every thing i have heard,so there is no disputing that, but he cant set your rifle up for every occasion out there, get some feeler gauges so you can keep track of the top hat , the distance behind it to the brass part of the valve, you will be moving it allot. i use dial calipers to measure the feeler gauges , after getting the gap distance ,you will need to blue loctite the grub screws so they will not loosen up on you while shooting.

you need to figure out what you want to do with the rifle, and where it wants to shoot the best with the pellet of choice.

shooting long range on a full bell curve you will get a large impact change throughout the curve, you may get several nice groups in the middle of the curve, but they will overlap, most of the time.

your running off of a huge air supply tank and you can get a long curve for informal plinking at short range, but for long range you will want to tune to the peak of the curve for consistency and peak accuracy, to keep from hav eing a large impact shift, or just shoot the curve and deal with or adjust the sights while shooting.

As 80 said , a higher fill pressure would slow the fps down at the begining of the cuve, and let it build back up to the peak that you already have at the 970 fps range, the peak will stay the same if you dont move the top hat.

The top hat is more for regulating the peak fps, and you use the fill pressure to fine tune the curve, and the power wheel as well,

so without messing with allot with what you have now, if you leave power wheel alone and fill to 2800 or so , or leave the fill level alone , and try turning the power wheel down to 3.3 , your curve will start out at a slightly lower fps and build up then come back down.

Dont make more than one adjustment at a time, then shoot it to see whats going on. you dont need to move the top hat until you want to change the peak fps, what i do is shoot a shorter string, if i want peak accuracy out of my condor , i shoot 15 shot s then refill, this is set up at the peak of the curve for the pellet that i am shootings best accuracy sweet spot. i will have 5 to 8 shots before the fps peaks and 5 to 8 shots after the fps peaks , .so that the fps variation is a low a possibly,

Now this is for bench rest accuracy testing, but, if you find this point with your combination , you can just fill over this psi for a larger shot count with the sweet spot still right in the middle, you can fill over 100 psi or depending on gun and pellet weight maybe a little more psi, you will have to play with this with your set up, and get like 30 nice shots that the impact on target will not move around very much. 🙂

or fill as high over this peak as you want for what ever shot count you are looking for.

for example if i wanted to set up my rifle for a field target i can go to my notes, fill to 1900 , set power wheel at 3.3 ,top hat .073( with .071 o-ring beind top hat ) , my string that i have in my records,,,, 789,789,787,(,792,791,789,794,792 these shots went into a .005 5 shot group at 50 yards )785,789,785,785,787,786, stopped string here. this was with the jsb 14.3 grain pellet.so i had 3 shots to settle the gun in then shot the two 5 shot groups. i could have kept on shooting but this was at the peak of the curve, all i would of had to do is fill to a higher fps and the curve would of started lower and made a longer shot count before peaking, then a longer shot count after the peak to the fps that it would have started at. 🙂

First off, thank you guy’s for your offers of knowledge.

My ultimate goal is to become a more consistent and accurate shooter at 50 yrds +. I would like to get as many single shot groups using those multi bull targets as I can. Like those 50 dot targets.

While shooting that string, I did try grouping on a target at 88yds. The grouping did seem to be best in the upper part of the string. When I started, I was grouping well low 2″ & right 1″ for about 20 shots. I then changed my aim point, elevation only for the rest of the string. By moving the first group into the second I would have had a 1.25″ hole with about 15 shots outside of it. Some of which were up to 2″ away. The fliers seemed to be more from the middle of the string to the end.

My main focus was to get the #’s, not accuracy at this point. But I’m realizing it is important to see what speeds a particular pellet and my gun mesh the best.

As far as the top hat, I did talk to Tony about it’s setting and he felt confident it was at it’s best setting for the configuration of my gun. At this point I would like to say I am very happy with all aspects of doing business with Tony at TALON TUNES. Fun money comes very hard for me having 5 kids and I am happy to say it was the right root for me.

Anyway I’m going to fill my bulk tank today and hopefully shoot some more.

Thanks for the input. Dion

2900 sp should get you more of a “curve”, but as the others have mentioned what is your quest? What is your favorite color?

What are you after ,i mean this looks like a nice string, do you want to start at the peak velocity and shoot on the back side of the curve, which this string is doing,

do you want a string that starts at a lower fps than this, like the end fps of your string , and peaks about the same as this string at around the 970’s then comes back to the lower ending fps. of the end of this string.

do you want to shoot off the peak of your curve for the tightest short string , for consistency and accuracy.???????

You don’t say what your top hat is set at, for this string, this is one of the most important things for adjustment.

i have had good luck with the 15.9 in the mid to high 900’s , .

Are you shooting at targets for groups when you shot this string, if you were you should have seen the groups tighten at some point in the velocity variation, then this is your target fps for tightest groups.

pull your tank and check psi at this point. if your were to fill just a tad over this psi ,your string would start just over this velocity peak accuracy sweet spot for a short string, for a longer string fill further, and make the peak the best accuracy point of the string.

So far these pellets are the only ones that have been grouping well out of this barrel. I’m going to order some exact heavies and try them. 2700 lbs is where my bulk tank is at right now, tomorrow I hope to get it topped off.

If you apply a logarithmic regression line to the shot count line, which you can do in Excel, you’ll see that you are quite linear and maybe somewhat peaked toward the higher PSI. But, the bell curve isn’t really displayed, therefore shoot some strings at 2900 and 2800, to add in that data and you may see the bell curve form higher up the PSI range, especially with that light (15.9 gr) a pellet
