Q:

A problem, and advice needed

I’m getting some erratic velocities with my Talon. I fill the tank to 2700 psi, and have my thumbwheel set at 4.5.

After 7 or 8 accurate shots, I get a couple of “duds” that drop about 2″ or so at 20 meters, and then it goes back right for the rest of the tank, and is fine. But there always seems to be a dud or two.

This seems to be a pattern. This is with my .22 12″ barrel. I didn’t run into this with my .177 18″ barrel. Is there a curve here I need to be aware of, or should I begin adjusting the wheel?

I’m not really much of a tinkerer, so I haven’t made any moves yet – waiting for some advice.

I dry lub the frame with breakfree. I use that(let it dry the 2 hours) and have a stainless steel hammer that I graphite paint every now and then.

Whatever you do don’t use oil… 😯 😉

After throughly cleaning the frame, what is the best coating / lubricant to apply ? Does it vary depending on the material used to make various hammers ? What is the best lubricant for the o-ring to barrel contact area ?

For the Frame….Air

Silicone grease for the orings on the bolt…..thats it

I’ve done all of the above except the complete cleanup WalkonKing suggested. That’s next, and I won’t overlube this time.

The clean up that Wok suggested was the most important part of solving your problem. Don’t bother fucking about with anything else until you have pulled it apart and given that frame a good clean out. You are kinda tinkering with the carbs when your engine is full of shit. NO POINT!!. CLEAN THE FUCKING GUN!!!! 😉 😛

I’ve done all of the above except the complete cleanup WalkonKing suggested. That’s next, and I won’t overlube this time. I know he’s absolutely right because the buddy I have help me doing this kind of thing (I’m a total mechanical idiot) did overoil it, I’m sure.

The gun is working better. With the power wheel at 7, I’m cutting 1/2 inch groups at 30 yards, with only the occasional flyer drifting about an inch. That might be pellets or wind. I’ll certainly kill any rabbit within 25 yards (which is my self-imposed limit) I run into when the season opens on Monday.

In any case, thanks a lot, and I’ll keep you all informed to my progress.

Clean the shit out of your frame.

You hammer is chattering

I’ll do that, too! 😀

Thanks guys. I’ve now got a starting point, and I don’t feel alone! 😆 I’ll let you know what happens, and I’ll start by cranking the power wheel up to about 7.

Had the same problem when I switched to a 12 in barrel in the talon . Every time I would fill up the tank some of the shots would be way low and one even clipped the shroud. I ran it through the chrony and found erratic numbers so I moved the power wheel up to 4 ,and the numbers improved and no more pellets hitting low or clipping the shroud.

Try increasing the power and see if this continues. Try the power wheel at 6 and see if the problem goes away

Gord;
I had the same problem with my Talon when I first got it. Crank the wheel up to 8 and keep shooting it. Mine seems to have straightened itself out after a tin of pellets.
-Brad.

I have had the same when the breech doesn’t rest against the top hat while the hammer is cocked. Any gap between the breech and TH will result in the hammer force being slowed down before it hits the TH… A double tap instead of a single transfer.

I fixed the problem by winding my TH to the breech while the hammer was cocked (no force on breech). My gun has been consistent ever since.

I had the same problem with my 12″ barrel. I got a new 18″ barrel from TT and when I went to install it I had a hard time removing the hammer. I had over lubed the barrel with divers grease and the whole inside of the frame was a mess. I now use a dry silicon spray on the hammer area and use very little lube on the breech o rings.
