Best method to grind a spring end flat ?
I’ve tried some tehcniques to get a very flat end on a spring, but wonder what methods you all use ?

Ya, if that’s the case, I would just coil another one on my lathe. It’s easier to make a short spring longer, than it is to make a long spring shorter. If you want the ends square to the body that is…

I think he cut an end off a spring and is looking to get it to sit right and so he says “flat”. Sort of like how the sample spring is already close to flat with one coil bent down to ride on the adjacent coil.
I think he has this:

A little more difficult and it needs more than a grinder to get it to lay flat. I’ve always done it with a pair or pliers and some curse words… 😆

I can make a short video to show how springmakers do it if you want.
You can chuck the spring in a drill chuck and spin the end on sand paper or a stone.
This also works if you want a down and dirty way to reduce spring strength. Chuck spring in chuck and squeeze sandpaper around spring length as you spin it slowly. If your careful this works well.
Keep spring perpendicular to the side of a bench grinder stone and rotate the spring as you touch it to the stone. The end of the wire should have the most grind. Perfect grind is 75% or 3/4 of the way around. Remember, the more you grind off, the weaker it gets. Try not to turn the ends blue and don’t quench it to cool it. Spray it with an air line to cool it.

Well if u need to flaten the end u cut. carefully heat just the end and push it on some flat steel. But do it really fast u dont wana heat the spring to much. It tricky but practice makes it easer
