Q:

Pretty impressive results from R&L Shroud Mod

I’ve been playing around with the R&L Shroud lately, trying to tweak it a bit to make the rifle a little quieter without increasing the overall length.

Mine shroud is just like Hoot’s pictured in this thread> http://www.talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19633

I tried springs and washers, foam, etc., but nothing was quieter then the bare cups. So finally, I took some 5/8″ OD PVC and cut some pieces that would fit just inside the cups. Drilled them out with lots of holes, hoping to disrupt and slow down the air. I used two pieces that were the size of the cups and one piece that was the size of two cups placed placed with the open ends together. Placed all this back in the shroud and began to shoot. It may have helped a little but I was tired of messing with it and put the rifle up.

A week or so later, John Whitfield comes over to the range and were shooting. Rifle sounds the same. Next day, I meet him over there again and it’s noticeably quieter. So much so that I think I’m having a problem. Shot it over the chrony, 925 fps with JSB 18.1, 34fpe.

That’s why I haven’t taken it apart to take pictures. I’m just going to leave well enough alone.

But it’s got me thinking about trying some relatively coarse wire mesh inside the cups. I believe that 6.75″ is plenty of space to get an airgun tamed. When I decide to break it down, I’ll take some pics. I can’t imagine what made the difference.

Okay, scratch that mod. Took the stubby to the range today. Accuracy stunk. 1″ plus at 35 yards. Took the moderator off, removed my additions and BINGO, I was back down to 1/2″ at 35. Oh well.
