Did some labor today. Boy was it hot.
I wanted to see what the old (4 years old) Talon SS in 177 ( stock, out of the box) would do over the chrony at a setting of 6 on the scale and 1 on the thumb wheel. This is the setting I have it zero at for shooting pest off the feeder. I don’t need a whole bunch of energy to dispatch the little pest that show up at the feeder. :15: :4:
The JSB Exact 8.4g is one of the top three pellets the Talon like at 30 yards, so that is what I used in the test. Starting fill was at 3000 psi, and ending psi was around 1000 psi, I think. Hard to tell with my filling tank.
Okay, I knew I would get more shots per fill shooting at a lower power, but was not expecting to get 145 shots on the same fill, and could kept on going.
I has 25 errors :banghead: in the 120 shot string. That adds up to 145 shot I took on the same fill. The slowest shot was 526.8 fps (feet per second). The fastest was 730.6 fps, so the average was 618.2 fps. The last shot I took was 687.8 fps. So it was still above the average. 😀
The extreme spread was 111.8 fps.
The average deviation was 44.0 fps. For the energy; average was 7.2 ft.lbs (foot pounds). with a range of 4.8 ft.lbs.
Using the last 20 shots of the 120 shot string the numbers look a lot better (power wise).
Ave velocity was 680.0 fps. Extreme spread was 94.4 fps. Average energy was 8.6 ft.lbs. Energy range was 2.4 ft.lbs.
So what’s next? I don’t know. Might shoot another string until the fps falls so low that POI falls. Or maybe lower the power down a notch or two and see how many shots I get off a fill and what kind of energy it does.
One thing for sure is that it has to cool down before I do any more shooting. Stopped at 9 am and was soaking wet with sweat. :18: Might be why the fps stayed up for so many shots ……. pellets lubed with sweat. 🙄
