bottle with deep scratch – is integrity compromised?
I was removing my valve to install an etac and even though I had the tank double wrapped in towel it still ended up getting a deep scratch from the vise. Deep meaning it is through the paint and left a raised edge. Will this cause any issues? Worse, could the bottle fail at the location of the scratch? Here’s a photo for reference:

In not going to tempt fate. Id rather dump it and spend the bucks for a new one then risk a failure. HPA is pretty serious stuff.

I would just buy a new tank and scrap that one and forego the extra cost of the hydro, why throw good money after bad.
I use a piece of thick heavy lezather I got form the local leather shop in the scrap bin, I use it for anything I want to protect in the vice.

Have it hydro tested. If you bring it to the testing facility they can look at it and either fail it on the spot (if the scars are too deep) or continue with the test. It my area the testing is about $30.00

Considering thats right about where your ear would be if it blows up, I would toss it.
Squeezing a tank in a vise at all will deform the grain structure. Its best to wrap it in a rubber sheet and stand on the tag end while wrenching the valve out.
Wrap the bottle so the rubber gets tighter as you try to remove the valve. Its easier than it sounds.
I would not want to take any chances with that one. Cut your losses and chalk it up to a learning experience. When I vice my bottles I use two pre-cut strips of 3/4″ plywood to put in between my bottle and vice walls…works great in lieu of newspapers and magazines….
Those scratches cause stress risers and grain deformation.
Should have used a wood vice. I would scrap it.
Can you have it hydro tested somewhere. That would be a cheap way to avoid stressing out every time you filled it. I don’t know if the places that do the testing can even test a AF tank but that’s what I would try.
