Q:

100fpe .22?

Hi guys,
I was wondering whether a Condor with a hi flo valve is capable of pushing a 37,5gr pellet at 1100fps. Also more or less how much do I set the top hat’s gap? I’m aiming for a 100fpe .22, something unheard of here in South Africa. Fill preasure would be 3000psi. Any advice appreciated. Thanx Nick.

Thanx Jerry, I understand what you’re saying. One thing I need explained is what the difference between a airrifle and a rimfire barrel? Is a rimfire barrel unchoked or is there more to it than that?

Nick,

I’m not telling you you aren’t a good enough shot or that it can’t be done. I’ve got a bunch of sub-half MOA 100 yard groups posted with larger airguns (not in perfect conditions of my choosing) so I know it’s possible. I’ve also shot a ground hog at 200 yards but I don’t put those in a pot…

My point is that relying on that ammo because it is the heaviest .22 round you can find is risky as it has no reputation for accuracy, as far as I know at least. If I’m under-informed, that’s great for you. Also, if that ammo requires a rimfire barrel as I think it does, you’re investing in a set-up that is not supported by any airgun pellet makers and you’ll have to rely on finding a rimfire bullet that is accurate at 200 yards.

I guess getting a permit for a larger caliber is a real PIA as you’re setting off on another potential PIA to get a 150M hunter out of .22.

Good Luck, all of us here would love to see you make it happen!

Nick,

I think you can build a .22 Condor that is accurate out to 200 yards but the conditions will have to be perfect and you will have to be damn good too.

You might want to rein in the expectations.

.

I was told the same thing when I first attempted 100m (110yrds) groupings with an airrifle, until I could do sub MOA groups on a regular basis. I (like many others) grew up carrying a rifle and hunting for the pot-this is Africa. Perfect conditions-well we have a lot of that here in S.A. It does seem that my expectations of the Condor were abit high but I still think with the right setuo and a heavy pellet, it would be possible to do some decent groups at atleast 150m.
That’s why I love this sport so much, seriously challenging.

Nick,

That Daystate Ranger Magnum ammo is for rimfire sized .22 barrels right? You’ll have to get a barrel made special to shoot that stuff and I’ve yet to hear that those pellets have been accurate.

200 yards sound like a job for 223 centerfire.

Excellent info guys, thanx. I’m not going to bother with high fpe, as you you’ve all proven that its possible but without accuracy. 980fps sounds more like it for accurate long range shots.

i got them up around 1190 with tons of trial and error

RJ what did you run the 32g. up to, guess i missed this , or did you not post about it.

i have seen 1150 with the 32 grain eunjin pellet in my 24″ condor, this was maxed out, did not shoot for accuracy because it was breaking the sound barrier , ( too noisy for at the house)at 1000 to 1050 it shot 11/2″ at 50 , but it shot great at 980 fps. with groups under 1/2″

I have stock condor valve, polished and modded myself, and everything on the gun polished out, with stock hammer and weight, and springs. 3100 fill, top hat at like .105 or so, power wheel at 10 to 12.

Thanx a ton for the responses, my main concern is an accurate set up. I want to be able to engage targets at anything up to 200yrds. Power and accuracy don’t necessarily go hand in hand, so I would rather aim at a lower MV and get optimum accuracy. The Condors seem to be right tool for the job. So far I’ve learnt a lot from this forum. I’ll keep playing. All the best,
Nick.

been there done it with the 32grn eungins it can be done with the proper mods yes u will lose accuracy i got 3/4in groups at 30yds good for close range not for distance RC went through the journey with me via pm’s he knows i went through hell but i got it done

What RC said, and also, that 37.5 gr pellet you are trying to push 1100 fps might not like being pushed that fast, so you may achieve the fpe but lose accuracy….

Thanx a lot for the help and advise guys, so by the looks of things I should rather be looking at 80fpe maybe 90. I’m going to play around and see what happens. Any other bits of knowledge will be appreciated.

Nick,

I think you would need to go with a heavier projectile.

I shoot 25 claiber 52 grain bullets at 930 FPS to get to 100 FPE.

The problem with the heavier projectiles in the 22 bore, is that so far an accuratre slug has not been develped. Jerry from Surefire (aka Jerry’s slugs) spent a lot of money out off pocket to see if it would work, when field reports reported poor accuracy, he shelved the project.

Good luck,

Roachcreek

Near the exact speed of sound is a very unsettled place to be for flight objects. There is a zone “around” the speed of sound, that you do not want to be in. So either you need to be maybe 75 fps under the speed of sound or never drop below 75 fps above the speed of sound during the entire flight. BUT you need to have a pellet designed for supersonic flight and these are all designed for subsonic flight. Hope you are aiming at a big target.

quote ssshooter:

There are more knowledgeable guys here but I would say 25 caliber or larger. Airgun pellets need to be driven below the speed of sound, preferably under 1000fps. For 100ft/lbs at 1000 fps you need a 45 grain slug.

Thanx Shooter, my theory is that a .22 rim fire (HV) runs at probably 1200fps+ with a 40gr projectile. The ammo I want to use is Daystate Ranger .22-37,5gr. At 1100fps it will be close to the speed of sound but not yet… The most important issue that I have is whether the Condor can push that pellet at 1100fps. From there I’ll adjust for accuracy. Our problem here is that any calibre above .22 will require a licence. Thanx so far.
