Gamo SOCOM Extreme accuracy ?
Hi All,
I’m trying to help out a good friend. He meant well, but went out and bought a Gamo .177 SOCOM springer. I tried to help him zero it at just 20yards. Tried a bunch of different pellets; Gamos, RWS and Crossman Premiers, nothing would group well. Does anyone have any experience with one of things? Is decent accuracy even possible? I don’t want him to spend any more money on it if it’s pointless. Thanks in advance.

I must confess a secret desire for a RWS 34 in .22, although my buddy recently encouraged me to get the .177. He says it shoots flatter than the .22 and is more useful at longer distances. What do you think Rob? Ya, I know buy two of each. 😉
I’ve got the 34 in .177 and a buddy has it in .22. For ranges up to 30 yards, the .22 does just fine… but for me, .177 is the way to go on a springer with the power of the 34. Now if you get into the 17+ fpe mark, then .22 begins to shine a bit more. Not saying the lower powered .22’s wont shoot… just a matter of personal preference for me. I find the 34 in .22 to be a bit finicky to be honest, but ymmv.

Try the Skenko New Boy 15.9gn 177 pellet. It shoots great in my Talon SS and may slow your gun enough to extract all of it’s power.
I’m sure that’s with super-lite PBA ammo though. I figured some heavy JSBs might slow the gun down and stabilize things. Has anyone tried some decent heavy pellets in any of the fast Gamo springers?

A realistic group for a Gamo spring gun should be aorund 1 inch at 20 yards, 5 shots. Some will do better but 1 inch should be a realistic benchmark.
I was using a well rested, loose artillery hold, the scope was tight, and the gun is almost new. This is why I don’t like springers, an airgun shouldn’t be difficult to shoot. I had a Diana 34 when I was a kid and remember thinking the same thing even back then. Ughh…
They are difficult to shoot, but can be quite rewarding….
Here are a few groups from various springers that I have…
http://www.airgundepot.com/gamo-socom-extreme-177-caliber-1650fps.html has it listed at 1650fps… that’s way too fast for an accurate pellet. Plus that power is too much for a spring to be stable (vibration etc).
What are you trying to shoot?
Paper – consider a 450-650fps 177
Birds – consider 700-900fps 177
Squirrels – consider 800fps 22
Racoons and Possums – consider a Talon SS 22, Talon 22, or other PCP
Long Range – consider a Condor 22, Condor 25, or other PCP
Zombie Invasion – consider a 308 center fire assault rifle.
High powered springers like yours are hard to shoot accurately.

Forget about trying Gamo pellets, you’d be better off shooting spit wads.

With most spring guns, you’ll need to use the Artillery hold. Very loose hold and allow the gun to recoil. If you use a bench, use a rolled up towel as a rest and dont grip the rifle, just loosely hold it and allow to recoil.

If you are not getting that, then likely you are not shooting the gun the way it needs to be shot.
You should try Premier heavies, JSB Heavies, or Kodiaks in this gun to get a bit more accuracy. The heavier pellets do tend to shorten spring life, but they will also help to dampen the shot cycle quite a bit.
Forget about trying Gamo pellets, you’d be better off shooting spit wads.
Certainly dont put any more money in to the gun. If your friend is serious about wanting a decent break barrel springer, the RWS 34 is the way to go and can be had for under $200. The difference in quality, shot cycle, and accuracy on the Gamo and the RWS is night and day.
They say springers and PCP rifles require a different hold.
I’d suggest a good cleaning of the barrel from the breech. Then clamp it in place except the barrel and try it. if it still doesn’t shoot good at 20 yards take it back to the seller for a refund.

for me springers should be .177, for a flat trajectory, and rifle should not have more than 12-17 fpe for better shotablity
but everything is possible..when i had m eliminator that threw kodiaks at 30 fpe…thats a .22 rifle for sure
i was just shooting my benji regal .177 and the groups where huge…so i decided to tighten screws, and sure enough all of them loose….but groups where still a bit on the large side with the 2 piece rings that came with the rifle and a simmons el-cheapo 3-9×32, which i had adjusted for paralax so it was perfect with my targets
so i took my BAM 1 piece mount and 3-9×40 scope of my bam rifle, it all came as one package….after adjusting it all of a sudden cloverleaf groups started to emerge…i was super surpriced, the glass in that scope is not good but i was hitting what i was aiming for…awesome…i imediatly aimed my rifle up 30 degrees a plucked a squirrels out of the tree….it had been munching acorns and watching me shoot….
SHORT….if your rifle is not shooting like it should…have you checked all screws ? use a 1 piece scope mount, and airgun rated scope
