Well I just completed my RRP class, 8 grueling hours of fun šÆ šÆ
Basically the EPA now requires any contractor who does work on pre-1978
homes to have this cert.
It is all about lead paint, mainly lead poisoning.
Some facts I learned
1. If you spread a sugar size packet of lead on 2/3 of a football field,
thats considered a lead hazard šÆ šÆ
Wow, how about a tin of kodiaks ?
2. Lead is put into paints to mke it more durable, mold inhibitor, prevents
rust and corrosion. Lead paint feathers better,dries faster, colors more intense
3. Lead stays in your body for 2-3 weeks you end up pissing it out
It can accumulate in your bones for 25 years, were so fucked š
4. Your body can’t tell the difference between lead and calcium
This can be a problem when you are under stress, Your body reacts by
taking what it thinks is calcium (but might really be lead) in your
bones and putting it back into your blood to help you deal with stress š
5. Lead keeps red blood cells from carrying enough oxygen.
Your kidneys filter your blood. Lead in your blood can cause kidney failure
Lead can also effect your gastrointestinal system, no wonder I am always farting š”
The nervous system, your brain, is the system most affected by lead š
6. Children, the brains of children develop by making millions of connections called neural pathways. Lead damages them, causing both learning and behavioral problem, damage is permanent
Lead doubles the number of US children who need special education š
I could go on and on with this shit, not going to :o, yeah it is all hyped up, like asbestos, basically ya gotta eat the shit for breakfast everyday of your life, to really get fucked up by it.
I just wanted to post this cause pellets are in fact lead

Just remember TAG, wash your hands after slinging lead projectiles
Most important, don’t smoke, lead on you hands, hands on smoke
lead vapor in your lungs.
Oh yea, one more fact, Children and pregnant women absorb 50% of what they are exposed to, non pregnant adults 10-15%

Lead is bad, but keep in mind:
Until about 50 years ago, most houses were built with lead pipes for water service.
The EPA changed the lead exposure limits recently by moving the decimal point over one.
Pure elemental lead is not as bio-available as lead salts (like found in paints).
One of the biggest gun ranges here in socal is on property owned by the water district. They get thousands of pounds of lead deposited every week on the soil in the watershed behind the dam, the water quality is unaffected.
Let me add, I realize my example is of the upper extreme of exposure limits.

I worked in a lead smelter for 5 years right out of high school.
I saw many a man retire and die within 2 years. It was after all the years of exposure, then withdrawing from it that they died.
Some claim it was withdrawal from inorganic arsenic. Back then (1987) the medical profession seemed to think it caused a chemical dependency.
I don’t know, I never researched it. I do remember getting blood drawn every 6 weeks over a 5 year period. I remember once having the company nurse drive out to my house and take another sample right in my living room because my arsenic count was 6 times too high.
That was when it was mentioned we had eaten a bunch of gulf shrimp the day before the test, and organic arsenic does not react the same way as inorganic in the body, but the test cannot (at the time) tell the difference. The 2nd test came out normal.
Arsenic or lead, the men still keeled over on a fairly predictable rate depending on one factor: How much did they try to keep from ingesting the stuff while employed there.
This place ran from 1886-200?, was bought out by a Mexican owned company and dismantled in 2008. Theres a long history however. The last 40 or so years guys were staying on, career men. Before that, its a shitty job and there was work elsewhere so turnover was very high and the rate of death is much harder to track.
The men who protected themselves lived like Spock, the others had various shades of Red shirts.
I guess what I’m trying to say is, don’t ingest lead if you can prevent it. Its not a fucking conspiracy spawned by your government to take your bullets away.
If you feel like you are superman, go ahead and breath all the lead fumes you want. Gargle with the shit if you feel the warnings are bullshit. A metallurgist told me once that for every ton of molten lead we hauled to the bullion room, roughly .2% of it was lost to fuming. Thats roughly 4 pounds of lead floating in the air in gaseous form, per ton.
I have no idea how much is in the air when we shoot though. Don’t really care. We all exhale slowly during every shot, right. š

EPA out of control š
One of my side trades that I haven’t worked in years is Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Requires training in Refrigerant recovery or what’s know as
EPA 608 Certification. The Ozone depleting chemical in most CFCs and HCFCs is Chlorine. The same Chlorine that’s used in household bleach that requires no special training (yet) to handle but emits the same Gas.
Mercury. If this stuff is so toxic and hazardous to handle why is it used for Dental fillings? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amalgam If the Government forces me to use CLF light bulbs then I’ll just toss them in the Recycling Bin and let them sort out the toxic mess they created.

Those folks do like to exagerate in my opinion.
As a child I used to carry my pellets in my mouth while hunting.
I started on a almost constant casting foray at age 22, casting on the kitchen stove where we cooked, that lasted until age 56 and for a few brief years stopped until recently.
I recieved a brain injury in the line of duty, and two shootings three weeks a part during that time and had extensive IQ, personality and medical tests conducted on me as a result.
The results were:
My IQ was in the top 3% of the world,
I passed all personality tests with flying colors, surpisingly. š Although I did go on to be a hermit for three years, but that was more a result of PTSS.
My lead levels were found to be lower than normal.
Now this is not saying that lead exposure is a benign activity, a Philly Range Officer with routine indoor range duty died 20 years ago with something like 140 times the normal limit.
I had always heard that once it was in you, it never left, perhaps that was the scientific understing at the time, but my levels are very low and I was pretty hap hazard with my early contamination.

Lead dust the size of a packet of sugar?? Wow. Then my range is a bio hazard that can be seen from space not to mention my pellet trap in the garage. š No wonder the guys from the EPA keep driving past my house.
Iām gonna start keeping some hand sanitizer in my field bag for sure. š

Dove and quail hunting deposits a lot of lead also. Gas used to have lead additives.
I use a duct seal pellet trap in doors for low powered guns and high power outside. With kids I always get them to wash their hands after shooting.
