Q:

I have a couple Tophat questions… please help

I was shooting my TSS with my son yesterday and had something weird happen. He had a couple shots that just came out sounding a little weak and dropped short. I was spotting shots for him and was down range (35yrds) It just didn’t sound right. this happened about 3 times.

With all the messing around I have done with my TSS, I have never once touched my Tophat or adjusted it, as a matter of fact I really don’t understand where you take the measurement from or how you adjust it 😳 It does have a little flex when I touch it. but don’t know if that is the way it should feel?
I attributed the weak shots on my kid not closing the bolt all the way because I shot another 50 shots and it didn’t happen again

It sounds like your top hat is loose. First, measure the distance between the bottom of the top hat and the valve with an automotive feeler gauge. Make a note of the gap.

Now, gently try to turn the top hat as it screws on. Can you turn it? Is it loose? If so, remove the set screws with a .050” allen wrench. Put a tiny, tiny dot of blue thread lock on each of the set screws and wipe off the excess. By not over applying the thread lock, you will be able to loosen the set screws if and when you want to change the velocity of the pellet. Changing the gap on the top hat is one way to increase/decrease the amount of air released when you pull the trigger. Re-install the set screws but don’t tighten them down yet.

Re-set the gap on your top hat of the space you measured in the beginning. GENTLY snug (notice I didn’t say tighten) the set screws down so as not to damage the valve stem on the valve.

If your top hat wasn’t loose then it is as you say, the cocking lever just wasn’t put in place.

Go easy on the boy. Mine kid has forgotten to put a pellet in and wondered why it doesn’t fire when he pulls the trigger ❗ 😆

There should be no wobble in the stem . And as to for the gap its the spot right behind the top hat to the front of the brass peace. I set mine to .100 or so and leave it. The reason is it get the slop out of the breach when its pull back and to the left or right .

What do you mean by flex?

Your tophat should not wobble or be loose
