Q:

Another top hat adj. Question

Ok I have searched and have read wok’s and mac1’s top hat articles. Wok states to start at around .070 and move up or down, so saying I move it up .002 at a time and the velocity increases everytime do I stop tuning the tophat when I no longer see a gain? When do I stop? Theoretically I will continue to gain fps the further I move it out. And where should I have the pw set? Start low? I will have to increase the pw after tophat tunning right?

Whew sorry guys I understand a lower tophat will use less air per shot and a higher will use more I just don’t know where to stop the tunning of the hat.

I had the pw wheel set at 4 when I initially tried tunning it but got inconsistent numbers till I figured my optimum fill pressure. It was set at .095 factory and I ended up setting it back there for now

With the pw at 7 and tophat at .095 with a start pressure of 2800 I get 30 shots averaging 780fps with cphp .22 and have an end of 2200 psi

Thanks for anyhelp.

Hoot, heard through the grapevine you got my old Walt in Hawaii 24″, .25 barrel… Treat her well, she’s a keeper. 😉

She was a Keeper, but just a little to long for my backyard blasting…but the 12 inch .25 LW I got in trade.. worked better for my situation.. Nice when a trade works out 😀

Awesome performance. Happy shooting!!!

Ok so I got it!!! .094 pw 6 avg. of 810fps good for 40 shots starting around 790 up to 820 and back down to 800 using 300 psi…

I’m happy where it’s at an am shooting 1 holers at 30 yards…

Thanks for the inspirational words…

Someone here described it as a balancing act and a dance combined. You have a valve return spring, hammer pretension spring, and pellet weight (back pressure) affecting the pellet. So its not easy. If you get the trajectory and energy you desire then don’t sweat it. A kill is a kill or a target score is a target score. Air is cheap and easy to acquire.

Happy shooting!

So I’m still plugging away at the top hat setting. Seems the lowest I can go is .070 the top hat seems to bottom out there. At .070 I avg about 630fps then moving up my fps drops below 600 till I get to about .080 . At .087 I average 730 all strings were 20 shots and topped off at 2500psi each time. It’s weird the first shot after making a th adjustment is usually a dud shot then it starts shooting like it should..

Going to get back at it tomorrow but I think im getting close. after 20-30 shots I only use 2-300 psi…

OOh yeah WIH is the man!

If you want max efficiency from a Talon SS, without using a lot of air to get to the fps/fpe you desire, then you need a longer barrel…period.

A short barrel can shoot as straight as a 24″ barrel, and for as long a distance, however that performance comes at a price and that price is sufficient air volume to produce the results you want.

You can contact Jim Gaska Marmot_Militia, and he can make you an LW barrel in any caliber and length you want. I went to 16″ on mine and am well satisfied with the performance. Plus, I can get a moderator in a reasonable length to quiet it down…although the longer barrel will quiet it down a bit, as well as give you better performance on less air usage.

The little Talon SS was never meant to be anything beyond a nice shooting pcp, with potential for good power and a quieter muzzle blast.

Around here, of course, the SS is just the beginning of something very special.

However, air is cheaper than an LW replacement barrel and new moderator to fit. So, live with it for awhile until you figure out exactly what you want out of that little platform.

You can have what you now have, or you can turn it into a long range hammer in .25 caliber, with a replacement barrel, a Condor Hi Flow valve, and a heavier hammer. There is no limit to what you can do with that AF platform.

Stick around…this gets REAL interesting in a hurry.

Thanks hoot…

Still just seems that I’m dropping alot of air per shot.
I also like shooting the JSB 18 grainers but use the cphp for tunning because they are cheap.

That’s as good a setting as any. Leave it there for now, as you will only confuse yourself until you read more and get involved in the various discussions on this forum.

It took me a year to gradually figure out how everything fit together, and how adjusting one part affects others.

Relax. As long as you are in the 750 to 950 fps range, depending on Power Wheel setting, with the pellets you want to use, then .95 is a very good setting.

Save the super-fine tuning until you gain more experience and understanding. Visit here frequently and catch the General, Talon TSS, Condor, Mods/Machinists sections postings. After awhile, all this will fall into place. No one here learned it immediately.

Also, check the Quick Reference section. A world of info there…too much to understand all at once. Shoot and learn, shoot and learn, shoot and learn, shoot and learn……read till your teeth hurt!

Your next chore is to find out what brand/weight pellets your rifle likes the best. That will bring your accuracy to where you have a hard time believing it. Just remember, nothing cheap ever shot worth a damn. I prefer JSB 18gr, and Barracudas 21gr. I get my best accuracy there. Yours may differ, but JSB is a very good place to start.

That’s my ten cents worth.

Kindly ‘Ol Uncle Hoot 😯

PS: And…there’s stupid people on here that make me look even stupidier! So read all the posts that pertain to your pcp and interests.
