I ordered another 25 caliber mold
I just ordered the Lyman 25-20, 65 grain mold, it is a 3 band, gas checked, SWC from Midway.
I will shoot it as is to see how it flys, and then consider having Erik Ohler of Hollowpointmolds either shave the gas check off, or mill it out to full profile and hollowpoint it..
My RCBS 25-50 RN mold is on its way to Eric now to get the diameter milled out to .255 and at the same time add a driving band to the nose, all this will also cure the oblong diameter too.
I have been trying to find a 22 mold for Markus in Indonesia. I have been emailing Erik about 22 caliber molds, they seem to be failures as far as performance. He says to do it right, you use a donor mold use the bottom and make it a hollowbase.
All of which would be expensive.
Anybody had experience with 22 cast bullets and airguns?
I have the mold thing under control, Marvin and Butcher are my enablers. 😯

I’m getting confused…which mold are you casting from, the RCBS right?
Have you received the lyman mold yet?

I got the mold yesterday and have cast up bullets with 20-1 and #2 alloy.
They drop out at 259.5 measured on my cheap inaccurate calipers.
THe weight with both alloys is 72 grains.
Filing the gas check off brings it to 58 grains.
This bullet is to big in diameter and scatters holes on the target like a mad womans shit.
I will have to consider a airgun designed bullet around 50 grains and have LBT make me a mold the correct diameter of .255 it appears.

Well I got a email from Erik at Hollowpointmolds, he made a mistake on the measurement of my mold alteration.
I had sent him a slug from the bore, which measured at .2549. But he mistakenly opened it up to .261. OOPS ❗
So he offered to fix it by sending me the price of a new mold plus the money I sent to get it altered. Which I am very much okay with.
I will wait until I see how the 65 grain Lyman bullet shoots before I order a new mold, and there is still the Ranchdog 57 grain swc Lee gang mold I have my name in for.

It will shoot them and would be a good bullets for low power, I have no idea how accurate they would be tho. I did not find the store bought hard cast bullets to shoot very well.
But I did find several light bullets that did, Jerry had one or tow and Butcher had some that hot well in my rifle. I never tried the one you mentioned in the Ranger.
LBT would proaby make a bullet like you have described for the 25.

Hell, I didn’t mean for that to sound like I was trying to sell bullets..I’m interested in the Ranger 45! 🙄

Do you not have one of the Ranger 45’s? I was looking at that rifle on their web page and found it uses 0.452″ bullets. I have about 25K or so of hard cast 200gr H&G bullets for 45acp. They are bevel-base of course, and lubed with who knows what but wonder if they could be used in the Ranger.

I think at those prices that I would be wasting my time doing it myself as it would take several hours to set up and do. What I think would be ideal is this lyman bullet without the center band with the GC shank removed or opened up. Too bad metal can’t be added on a mold only removed.
I’m following your post closely because when you sort it out I may contact Veral of LBT about a custom mold. I can’t remember how long ago, but two or three yrs ago he was not making molds other that the standard molds. What we’re talking about would not be a big deal so maybe it well work out.

I am wondering also and had planned on doing that, so I will let you know how it turns out.

Erik who owns the company works fast and he is not expensive. He can take that gas check off two ways, one is like you suggested, shaving the top, or he can take a cutter and just make that gas check the same diameter as the rest of the bands.
I am having him widen one of my molds, the 25-50 rn, plus add a band on each cavity. he is charging me $61.00 plus shipping, but remember he is widening 2 bands on each cavity, plus adding a band on the nose. So what you want would be much cheaper.
On Eriks website, he has many pictures of molds he has finished and it is worth looking at.

When you receive your lyman mold would you please cast a few with pure lead or a very soft alloy and file off that GC base and weigh? I’m also interested in that mold but was wondering how much weight this would take off. I’m thinking of ordering one myself and milling and then facing off with a fly-cutter. I guess I could just set up in a four-jaw chuck in my lathe and just face it off. Then replace the sprue cutter and all.
