Q:

What’s it Worth?

My father in law has a brand new Ruger Mini 14 Stainless Ranch Rifle with 1 (5) and 1 (20) round mags. It’s about eight years old but still brand new in the box and has never been fired. It has a wooden stock not synthetic. He’ll sell me everything including 400 rounds of Winchester ammo for $700. Deal or no deal. I have no idea what the package worth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay guys, thanks for the input.

Eh, at that price it would be like buying a 1987 Ford Taurus that is still brand new for full showroom price…

While being a handy compact ranch style rifle is not very accurate… If your really looking for a 223/556 i’d thrown in a few hundred more and go for a Bushmaster M/AR clone… A friend has one and I was not very impressed. It also has a M1 style ejection system which pops the brass pretty much straight up out of the breech and its a bit of a pita.

I would go no more than $500, which is probably about the most you could get if you shot it a few times and tried to sell it.

The target version has a thumbhole stock and a longer barrel I believe (unfortunately that makes it illegal in CA) and from what I have heard it’s a shooter compared to the other models.

He’s charging full retail on the rifle. You can buy a brand new one for $695 just about anywhere, and less in some places. You can certainly get a good used one for $450 to $500.

400 rounds of Winchester ball ammo is just about worthless. If any of them are soft point, hollowpoint, or anything but full metal jacket, then the ammo might make the deal worth it.

Unused doesn’t mean much. These rifles are utility guns and usually don’t get heavy use anyway.

If it’s .223, or NATO 5.5, FMJ, then you can buy ammo in bulk for fairly cheap. If it’s the Russian .30 cal, even cheaper in Wolf brand, or Mil surplus.

If he said $550 to $600, depending on ammo…then it might be a good buy. Otherwise, get yourself a new one in stainless steel, syn stock, and do it right.

Just my two cents worth. Mini-14’s not all that much a rifle anyway…in my opinion.

I sold mine with 2 30 round clips and a scope mounted on it for $400, I bought it without the scope used for $300, Those guns are not the best for accuracy either. Ruger guns like Dirty barrels, On my 1022’s I put the green mountain barrels on both of them, and they are tack drivers,, I don’t know if you can Mod a Mini-14 if you can, you would have a fortune in it. 😀
