Best top hat?
What is the best measurement for a top hat? For the most power and number of shots?

KenNC – The above testing results were not mine; they were eddieirvine’s. That was a quote from an e-mail he sent me about his rifle. (GO EDDIE!) I’ve tried the O-ring trick on my .25 condor and the testing is inconclusive. I’ve not tried it with the .22 barrel that I bought from Eddie. My testing has shown me that depending on the top hat gap and the power wheel setting, the top hat can and will hit the valve. I’m in the testing stages of determining what settings prevent this from happening.

Moneyshot – I did the trigger mod after much fretting over screwing something up. A pretty easy thing to do. I don’t have a mill or a lathe and did the mod by hand. When you get ready to do it, PM me and I’ll give you my phone # and walk you through it.
The original post question about best top hat – This is like asking someone if they like vanilla or chocolate ice cream. Y is right about power or shot string. My .25 can shoot a good 62FPE for 20 shots in a one inch group at 50 yards BEFORE my trigger mod. (I want to try for accuracy again. Just haven’t had the time) And I’ve put my 12” barrel in, turned the power down via top hat and power wheel, to where the rifle only makes about 11FPE and shot over 60 shots at our local indoor 10 meter range. If you’re serious about Airforce rifles and all the (endless) possibilities of this gun, you’ve got to get a crony or you’re wasting air.
So do you want shot string (vanilla) or power (chocolate)?
AirgunsofTulsa, Thanks for the great info on using an O-ring and your findings in dropping the fill pressure down to 2200psi. What was your Top Hat set at ? I was curious if you had to raise it toward the upperhalf of the range with the O-ring and low pressure or was it set lower? Im assuming you are using a stock Condor Hammer…Thanks

MOST Power and MOST shots are at opposite ends of the performance scale.
If you want the most power without wasting air…. there are too many variables to give you a definitive answer. Comes down to trail and error and during the process you might find that you don’t mind losing a few fpe from the max velocity to gain a lot more shots.
Money shot trigger mod is in the quick ref not my mod but one from an older member works great just follow what he posted! what it consist of is two set screws that work together to make a nice trigger!
please, do tell bout the trigger mod…i just lightly stoned and did a little trial/error with springs and came up with a smooth, crisp lb. even. i could go lower, but i start gettin nervous… 😯

I used an oring that was 1/4″ x 1/8″ x 1/16″ thick you really have to stretch it over the large part of the top hat I used a couple paper clips! so put in on the back side of the top hat and you are ready to go! Here is what I have without the oring and an 18″ barrel power wheel on 0 jsb 18.1 gr pellets, fill pressure this took me a bit to settle on but fill pressure on mine liked to be filled to 2400psi and I shoot down to 1700psi for 30 very good shots! Ok now I put an oring on the back of my top hat! I go out and shoot same fill as above I get really low reading on the chrony I think it was 870 with 18.1 jsb pellets so I decide to continue shooting stayed right around the same at 870fps for about 12 shots then all of a sudden I look down and see 935 then a 940 so I continue to shoot until there is a noticeable drop off in fps I didn’t count the shots! so I am still confused a bit! I go in fill to 2400psi and start shooting again same thing as above so when it gets to the 935-940 fps I took the tank off went in hooked it up to my scba tank and slowly filled so I could see where it stopped at stopped right at 2200psi so I went back out got chrony 0 out and started shooting this time keeping track of my shot count! I won’t list all the shots but it averaged out to 930 fps for 45 shots!!! yep 45 so I went in filled it to 2200 psi and shot down to 1700psi same thing same
average fps so from there I have been a happy camper! Why did this happen well of course the oring! what was going on! with the higher pressure in the tank being at 2400 and the oring being a cushion the hammer could not hit it hard enough to get the pressure out it needed for more fps! until it got down to the 2200 now things are cooking great fps high lows and average really well! so the moral of the story with the oring behind the top hat acting like a cushion you are now not wasting air any more like it was without the oring and it is not taking allot of air to do this! so in my opinion this is one over looked mod that cost 10 cents!! Just look at the numbers I fill to 2200psi shoot down to 1700psi power wheel is on 0 pellets of choice are 18.8gr jsb’s and I am running at 930 fps probably around 38 foot lbs of energy and I did all this with 500psi
of air! which calculates out to just a hair over 11 lbs of air per shot!! how
good is that!! Sorry for the long explanation but I love talking about these

I need the most shots with 18.1 JSB’s at 950 fps or around there.
How much power do you need? What are you try to get out of it, a high number on the chrony or a boatload of shots at the range?
