How to modify valve so that it is always-open?
Hi guys, I’ve got a little experiment I want to try, but in order to do so, I would need to gut my valve so that it maintains its spring loaded goodness, but is “always open”.
Doable?

Is a valve stem guide something that could be swapped in and out of an existing tank setup as a “conversion” or would it permanently designate the whole valve as fucked?
if you cut a couple of grooves into the sealing portion for the brass valve stem guide you could accomplish what you want but it would be a perminent mod requireing the guide to be replaced if it dosn’t work how you want it to…

The mechanism I have in mind for this project involves the back and forth movement of a revolving drum to allow a positive seal with the exposed barrel in our rifles.
So, I figure, since the valve head already moves back and forth while keeping a seal, if I could somehow keep the spring loaded mechanism, but make the valve always open (as I am controlling the airflow elsewhere), then all would be right in the world.
1. bolt starts closed, valve head fully extended, everything is sealed up.
2. as you pull back to open the bolt, the valve head is compressed while the drum moves back as well, unseating itself from the barrel end and rotating one step.
3. Bolt is now “full open”, drum cycled, valve compressed. basically everything is lined up with the barrel end, but there is a small gap.
4. as you close the bolt, valve head begins to extend again, and drum makes contact and seal with LW barrel end.
5. in fully closed position, the valve is once again fully extended, making a seal with the drum, and the drum is pushed forward against the barrel end, sealing there as well.
making any sense?
The spring is to keep it closed. If you want it always open then I’m wondering why do you still need the spring?
not sure what youre workin at, but maybe a vented spacer for the seal to seat on and turning out the spring retainer? you gotta clarify your intentions, and im sure something could be done…

the stem guide, seal and stem/tophat can be swapped between tanks(once empty, of course…) without repercussion
