What’s a Polygon barrel?

I read Hoot’s post about his son of stubby build. Cool looking gun. He references a polygon barrel. I have seen this also in threads elsewhere about the HW100. What is it and what are the advantages vs a LW barrel or any other for that mater?

Exactly what calibers does the “empirical” come in??? Do you have pictures of it? Is it true it’s made in Korea?

I believe polygonal barrels are used by H&K in the MP5 and HK53 etc, much favoured by SOF. I read an old article saying that barrel wear was vastly reduced and cleaning was easier. I’ve had a look at more recent weapons like our new .338 sniper rifle and Designated Marksman weapon and they have standard rifling.
not an empirical comparison, just of interest.

Sometimes less is more.

Seems strange but consider the new “Smooth Twist” rifling, where only the end of the barrel has a “twisted barrel” rifling. Smooth bore up to that point.
