Mobil 1 as a Substitute for Pellgun Oil
My buddy recently aquired a 2240 and began down that trail. He told me that last week he was speaking with a Crosman customer rep who told him he could substitute Mobil 1 synthetic oil for Pellgun Oil for use in their CO2 guns. Has anyone else heard of this? Do any of you use Mobile 1, or any other lubricant in place of Pellgun Oil?
The obvious reason for this quest to find a substitute is that a tube of Pellgun Oil is $5…for 1/4 ounce. That’s $640 per quart!!! 😯 If Mobil 1 is safe to use and has the same benefits as the Crosman liquid gold, then I’m going to draw up some Mobil 1 in a 10cc syringe and make the switch. 😉

I use ATF4+.
The only reason I use that is it is what I had on hand at the time when topping of my then leaky Dodge van’s transmission.
I also have some left over Dexron 3 for the GMs and Mercon V for the Ford Taurus I once drove. Don’t really know the difference.
My reasoning is using trans fluid is that transmissions have rubber seals in them and I was told by a mechanic that the fluid helps preserve them.
Don’t know if that is really so,…. but it made sense to me.
He also said that regular petroleum based oils are murder on rubber.
This article is a bit over the top tech talk wise about hydralic oils, but a lot of info is there.
Go down several paragraphs and it explains the difference between DOT3, 4, DOT5.1 and DOT 5 brake/hydralic fluids.
(DOT 5 is Silicon based )
