Q:

condor body

hello all, been a while since ive posted. anyhoo, as im understanding it, the body of the rifle holds no pressure. the breech is some sort of plastic (delrin?). so if i designed a molded body of some high strength plastic or epoxy resin, id be okay, right? id be re-using parts from a standard condor, like the breech and all the internals and trigger parts…expensive i know, but for those that know a bit about me, you know my ideas are always expensive! so guys, let me know what you think!

Rowdy, I watch the schedule closely and if something is going thru that might prove useful to me I let the quality inspector know. If the parts are scrapped (less than 2% chance), he sets them aside until I take a look at them. Since they are in his locked cage, and I’m one of three who has the key (I’m the inventory coordinator), its normally not a problem.
I’m not greedy though, and most of those coworkers actually have a use in mind before they ask for them.

Over the past 7 years Ive acquired tubes from .185″ID to 11″ID, the vast majority in the small end of that range.

Most of it is actually useless, but some of it has become priceless. 😉

You need to cripple some of those co-works and let them know who gets what and that you will let them know what they can have, just after you get what you want…

I have not messed with any of that stuff, from what it sounds like though, quite to stuff… I really like that sort of stuff, when that sort of stuff actually works LOL…

Dang man sounds if you do lots of this sort of stuff for sure… Me, I am the guy in the field that has always been handed something basically new, but sold, that was less than it was suppose to be and I had to make it work better or at least, just work as it was sold to work LOL…

I actually like taking things and check out how they work and all, then take them all apart and make them work way better LOL… Not trying to mass-produce things and all, I usually can, many times much better…

Syn, yea pre-preg only. Wet layup does not work well for tubing and thats our bread and butter.

Money, I have some and from time-to-time get more but I have a lot of co-workers that beat me to the scrap bin.

Ive got carbon tubes I could build up for a frame. Only one thing keeps me from doing it, my gun already shoots and handles just the way I want.
Maybe someday…

One thing I would consider if making an epoxy/carbon/other frame is the hammer slide surfaces. Theres a reason they use anodized aluminum, it resists deformation and is easy to keep clean and smooth.
Epoxy does not work harden, it slowly deteriorates.

However, use a barrel guided hammer and you can forget that problem.

The aluminum is extruded, so the ID is more or less consistent. Carbon tubes are very slightly tapered inside to facilitate removal from the tool they are rolled on. A zero-taper tool almost never lets the tube slide off, even if it was carefully released.

You are right to not use carbon fiber if you’ve got zero experience with it. I almost guarantee you do not have the tools to make it work in a home shop.
Molded parts require a heated press. If you compress mold and have the mold halves bolted together, maybe you could make a part in an oven. For bladder molded parts, you need a heated hydraulic press and a constant air supply.
Tubes require a tape wrapping machine to keep the material tight to the tool you rolled it on, and an oven large enough for the tools. The tape is polypropylene for the release layer, and nylon for the compression layer. Very hard to wrap by hand, and dangerous as hell if you try to do it with a lathe. Speaking with experience here… 😆

ive been dying to get some myself, but the smallest container i could find was something like 100 bux or so, a bit much for my intended purposes(AR grip mounting, thread repair/reinforcement, etc.)

well, im hoping to alleviate the frame flex a bit by making it right side feed only, and lowering the scope rail a bit. and id really rather not use carbon fiber, because its a bit too expensive to work with, and the fact that i have less than zero experience with it. im more thinking of making a good plug of the body that i want, then a good mold, and then a good cast in an epoxy resin. im hoping that the tolerances would be just a little bit tighter, and i get what i want as far as the body. plus i wouldnt have to worry about getting a body machined from aluminum; that would be way too cost prohibitive. there’d be more metal shavings from the machining than would be body…im exaggerating, but it would be alot of wasted material. im more concerned with whether or not an epoxy resin would be a feasible material.

what about carbon fiber? don’t know how hard it is to work with, or if it’s even feasable, never worked with it. just a thought. that being said, anything you use would still need to be stiff enough to overcome frame flex due to the inherant weakness in the breach / trigger area.
