metal question

can stainless steel be brazed? or welded? what kind of steel could it be welded to? just stainless? i have a project in mind, and was just wondering. also, which aluminum would be better to use? 6061 or 7075? in so far as machining it.

sweet. im going to make a bolt for an airgun that uses a remington 700 bolt handle, and the factory Rem bolt handle is stainless. the steels you quoted in the post are all stainless steels? also, i was reading up on 7075, and its stronger than 6061 but is it as easily machined as 6061? the aluminum is for another part of the build. also, from a machinists standpoint, if i wanted to mimic a contour thats 1.20″ x 3″ w/a strait taper to .91″ (its the barrel contour, the barrel’s 24″ long)…would it be easier to have 1.20″ x 3″ w/a taper down to 1″ over the length of 3″, and the 1″ for the remainder of the barrel shroud? thanks again. im not a machinist, and im just trying to make this look like i want it to, but trying to make it as cheap as possible too. although i know most of this build will be crazy expensive. thanks again for any and all help.

You can weld stainless to steel with a tig. You use filler rod 309 for welding 304 to steel and 308 for 304 to 304.
