Talon Tunes Angled Tank Adapter Mini Review

The Airforce Airguns have always been a tinkerers dream. They have a design that begs modification and many have fabricated parts on their own or have relied on the numerous machinists out there to get their fix of ‘Airforce Bling’.

These items have ranged from new valves and hammers, barrels in many configurations, buttpads, and even new ways of mounting AR 15 grips…not to mention the various shiny bits such as triggers, endcaps, and bolt knobs.

One item that has eluded the US market for a long time was the angled
tank adapter. Those of us on the Talon Forum started seeing these some
years back from a group of Argentinean enthusiasts but attempts to purchase them in the US were futile.

Enter Tony from Talon Tunes. Widely recognized as the best vendor out there when it comes to all things Airforce, Tony started teasing members of the Talon forum late last year with such an adapter and the Talon community drooled at the thought of finally being able to buy these in the US (of course, Tony will also ship overseas where legal).

Tony’s tank adapter is an all in one unit that offers a high quality pressure gauge and quick fill while dropping the tank proving a more stable and ergonomic shooting platform to the popular Airforce airgun lineup.

Initial impressions were the unit was well made, with clean cut threads and no machining marks. The gauge and quick fill are high quality units and the adapter as a whole looks great.

Installation was as easy as removing the valve from the bottle, screwing
it into the adapter and screwing back into the frame of the gun. If
the adapter does not time properly after screwing on to the frame, you will need to remove the grips and slide away the small plate to access the grub screw that holds the bottle collar. Loosen this grub screw and position the adapter properly on the rifle, mark the collar and drill out a small dent for the grub screw to catch. Replace using the new location for the grub screw and assemble your rifle. This is a very easy modification to make and takes less than 10 minutes and a simple hand drill and Allen head wrenches.

Shouldering the rifle proved much easier than stock and cheek weld is greatly improved. The length of pull is increased by about 2 inches, and most normal sized adults will have no problem with the added LOP. By dropping the tank, the need for extra high mounts for mounting optics is also negated, a much needed enhancement to these guns.

The looks of the angled adapter on my Condor is amazing. Tony offers these in silver or anodized black and can be had by checking out Tony’s products at http://www.talontunes.com.

***Note that as the weather improves, I will take some better pictures of the unit and edit. My apologies on the current pics, but I did want to get the write up out there.

Edited to add more pictures…

Nice look at the TT Angled Tank Adapter and followup discussion.

A few comments I’m sure won’t be popular…

First, in my opinion, any install that potentially involves ANY drilling is not easy, straight forward or for the faint of heart. Maybe to those with more expertise and courage but I’m guessing not the average shooter.

Next, the fact the the adapter eliminates the need for high ring scope mounts is not necessarily a positive – Many (most?) currently have a scope mounted w/high rings and adding more height to an already high sighting geometry caused by AF rail design might require new mounts to get things back to near minimum “normal”.

Last, although I’m sure the TT products are of the highest quality, they are not inexpensive. At $159, the Adapter comes in at about 22% of Condor cost! Again, maybe I’m the exception and it’s just my paltry budget that balks.

Don’t get me wrong – I’d love to have some of the TT mods but cringe at spending considerable additional bucks on an already expensive toy and worry about “work” to the rifle that might void warranty, possibly cause unforeseen issues and/or affect authorized service if needed.

In any case, I guess the real question becomes – Does an AirForce rifle perform adequately as manufactured? As a very new PCP Shooter, Condor seems accurate but for my needs could be a little quieter so my challenge becomes how to meet goals without spending a bunch.

The Spin lock frame is machined for the new threaded bushing. I was going to order the new bushing and put it in my earlier frame but it wouldn’t fit without machining the breech side. I did drill and tap the old frame to simplify re indexing of the bushing.

John, thanks very much for the spin loc wrench. It was waiting in my mailbox when I arrived home from work…now the TTTA is indexed properly, and time to attach the tank to the adapter πŸ˜‰

happy to help πŸ˜›

I didn’t know there was nor have I ever had to use a wrench for the spin-loc, I simple loosen the set screw and tighten the tank slightly, turn the spin-loc into place and finish tightening the tank to the frame. Works every time for me.

Attach the TTTA to the tank first.
Then index the tank to the rifle.
Let me know if you need help.
Good Luck,
Tony

Question: I have the old style frame. How hard or easy is it to index the collar for the TTTA? Rob (or anyone who has both) how much does this (TTTA) increase the L.O.P. Compared to the long straight E-Tac?

here is how it works same idea just different tank
skip to 4.18 unless you want to know how to fill the tank lol

pm sent…

send me your address i have an extra wrench i will send it to you

Yea I forgot that the new ones coming from Pyramyd Air are spin loc….thanks guys πŸ˜‰ atm it’s already taken all the way down and then some….just need the wrench to index the adapter then I can get ‘er back together πŸ˜‰

Nate’s right.
You have a spin loc on your rifle. Call AF and get a spin-loc wrench to tighten collar but first you have to loosen the exterior set screw.
Good luck, Tony

OK….I recieved my TTTA from Tony not long ago, had no problems disassembling my tank assembly…putting the parts together into the frame, I could NOT index the adapter with the frame… AF seems to have changed the assembly. there is no longer 2 grub screws holding the collar in place in the frame, the one outside the grip area.. there is now a wierd modified C-ring (more shaped like a Y lol) holding it into place and I haven’t found a way of removing it simply…I will try to post pictures of it tomorrow lol… I’m dying to get this back together again.

Sounds like you have the spinlock frame. AF has a tool for indexing.

does anyone make a video for full instruction of installation?
also if anyone knows if the adapter can add a regulator on it?
