Playin with Jerry..

Today I put the 110gr hammer in, and figured I would power it up and see how the gun handles Jerry’s 6ring 62gr slugs.

Tried to tweek up the power as much as I could, and the best I could get was about 775 to 800fps with these 62 grainers and 1025-1035 with my regular Benji 27.8gr’ers. Guess this 18″ .25 barrel is hurting power a little bit. I would have to pull the valve out and tweek it to get more power, just not in the mood at this time to go to such extremes.

Any how was shooting aroud 76fp with Jerry’s (Timy’s slugs).

Top left and top right Benji 27.8gr.
Bottom left 62gr slugs.
45 yards..

4 out of the 5 slugs make one large hole, with one flyer 1/2″ out.

I figured these slugs would group like crap..Big 1/2″ long chunk of lead.

They shot on par with any other pellet and just as well as my staple pellet (benji 27.8), in this little test.

Thanks for the question. The answer is that nobody on the planet knows what the BC of any of the slugs is when fired from your gun, you’re on your own, get a chrony.

No, I’m not taking a stab at being funny, I’m giving you the straight dope. BC is a made up number that is used like a constant even though it is not a true constant. That is easy to realize when you dig into it a bit and see that there are multiple formulas to derive BC based on velocity ranges and general shapes (you probably want to use “G1”).

There are some internet calculators that take shape “semi-wadcutter” and caliber and weight and spit out a BC value. For the slugs, those calculators turn out really high values. I don’t know, but I have a gut feel those numbers are a bit high.

I have posted those values but I don’t index all my BS so I don’t have them at hand, sorry. That’s no real loss to you though and here’s why: BC changes with velocity. The biggest changes happen at sonic transitions and if you get your gun cranked up, you’ll be shooting right in the heart of the change region. I recommend you use the G1 formula but you should also realize that the military funds most ballistic research and we don’t dhoot much that leaves the barrel sub-sonic. Most of the research is in high speed and ludicrous speed regions. The calculations for slow stuff are pretty old and not much changed from the days when slide rules were cool.

I did some fairly serious testing with some Barnes designs I use in my Barnes .32s. I had the luxury of a tack driver gun with easily changeable power from about 80 to 180 FPE with the same slug (others went higher and lower but the range is the important point). What I did was use average figures from multiple shots from the gun tethered to a regulator and collected speeds from the chrony at 3 yards and at 43 yards. A better test would be 2 chronys but I’m only so dedicated… Anyhow, I got distinctly different values shooting on high power vs. shooting on low power. That wasn’t a fluke, I repeated the same thing with several different slugs of vastly different weights. I posted the results on the airgunrendezvous site years ago.

Those results made me question if the scope knob programs on chairgun and other programs could be useful. Well, oddly enough, I think they can be if fed the right info. Neil (posts on the Yellow and on Airgun rendezvous and the hunting forum) made himself a tape to put on his gun (.22 pellet) and every couple months posts a photo series showing how he lasered a rabbit at 100+ yards, dialed the scope and killed the thing!

Neil clearly used the right value and he’s freaking lethal. I’ll bet if you shot some slugs from your gun and determined the BC in your velocity range, you could make a custom tape for your scope and do the same thing.

Oh, the short answer besides not knowing is “a lot higher than JSBs, Kodiaks etc!” 😆

It only has one tank full of the juice. Only recreational use. That was the first time I actually took it out and went somewhere that I could shoot it without a shroud. I brought 53ci of juice and had some fun. Louder then a AR 15 and almost as loud as the .308 that was there. Guy couldn’t believe how loud it was and put on his ear muffs.

Here is a 4 shot group at 100 yards (7 rings) I did awhile back with my AAA condor at around 85 fpe at the muzzle. 3.5″ ctc.

7 rings are 70gr. The 100 9 rings I’m shooting from average 89.8gr. Every bag of 100 are a little different. One of my condor style valves on helium.

With what rifle where you pushing 9 rings at 1150 fps 😯

I would be happy if they grouped 2″ at 50y and 3″ at a 100y. I know they do better but most people shooting slugs are not shooting sparrows. I have yet to punch paper with them but the 9 rings breaking the sound barrier (1150fps) had no problem hitting 20 ounce water bottles at 65 yards with some wind.

Or you can figure it out in Chairgun… 😉
