Fill Question
How do most people fill their tank? I picked up a scuba adapter (actually two), but I am concerned that I will not be able to fill the tank up enough with just a 3000psi AL tank. In addition, the tank is out of hydro, so I will need to get it hydro’d – if it is still ok (20 yrs out of date…).
Would I be better off just getting a pump or different setup. Bare in mind that I am cheap and just spent $$$ on the rifle, so the more economical the better at the moment.

AF rifles are actually one of the most efficient airguns in the world…..or can be. Its all a balancing act between hammer weight, hammer spring pre-load and valve return spring to try and draw out an efficient valve. You must be wasting air somewhere for that to be happening. Ive heard that someone managed a 50 shot string at 30+ FPE in .22 on the old forum. Your Mrod is shooting well from the box but the AF rifles more often than not need some work or tweaking to get them to shoot sweetly. What are the barrel lengths of your Mrod and Talon?

I can’t believe how inefficient the A/F rifles are. I refill my Mrod from 2000 to 3000 psi with no more than 80 pumps from my Hill pump and get 35 shots. Conversely, my Talon takes almost twice as many for the same number of shots. Velocity is comparable. What gives?
I think your at the bottom of your power put 2800 in and see how it goes.
Pump arrived today – it is a Hill MK2 by all reckoning. All of the literature says Hill.
Anyway, I pumped up my tank to 2100 psi and tried some shots – 400 fps (PW at 6). PW 10 = 484 fps. Note that this is a used Talon SS that had been mod’d to a condor. I took it back to stock last night and everything looked good. I was tried adjusting the top hat and it fell off (was bored out too thin)! So I had to empty the tank and put my spare CO2 setup in it. Long story short – complete re-fill. This time to 2300 psi. It took 8 or 9 sets of 50, with long breaks between and venting to clear any water. I still have not tuned it, but am getting higher speeds with heavier weight pellets – 767 fps with JSB Exact Monster (25.6 gr) = 33.45 fpe – now that’s what I am looking for. Old Kodiaks (21.2 gr) were 747 fps = 26.27 fpe. More tuning ..and pumping… to come.

My gun will shot just great with a 2400 psi fill and go all the way down to 1500 psi and get about 35 good shots. Unless your gun is set up for it, a 3000 psi fill will only cause you problems.
The hand pump will work just fine and it is good exercise.
Not sure about the psi, but don’t overheat your pump. Take breaks while filling to let the pump cool off.
I ordered a BSA/Hill pump from Midway for 176 (189 delivered). I could not afford the shoebox. Besides, everyone says I need exercise. I have two tanks, so I plan to fill in my spare time. What is the typical fill pressure with a hand pump?. I know it can go 3000 psi, but with the Talon SS I thought 2400 psi would be better.

I’ve used a Hill pump for 6 month, it takes about 250 pump to go from 1700 to 2700, for 35 shots, for a few dollars more no pumping and about the same time. And it will fill your tank for instant refills.
I will get the tank hydro’d before I use it, but it should be ok. It was kept semi-filled (1000psi) and dry. What is the typical fill pressure range for the AF tank?
Would a hill pump be out of the question – ala 100 pumps for 6 shots.

2x the Shoebox, if you don’t get one now, you will get one later. There on sell right now, I guarantee you will not regret it.
20 years out of date. That means the tank is 25 to 30 years old.
I would not trust that tank. It’s your life you are betting with.
Buy a new tank if you have some place to fill it. Go with a pump if you don’t. The price is about the same if you get a scuba tank. You already have two yokes.
For more fills off a tank, go with a 4500 psi tank, but you will have to buy new scba (din) adaptor. Again see if you have a place to fill the tank to 4500 psi before you buy.

Shoe Box compressor. Cheaper in the long run. You will not have to pay for refills, hydros or yearly tank check ups.
