Air Arms s510 Extra FAC .22 and rice sock groups
Wanted to see how dry rice in a sock, filled kinda tight, would work as a front bag. Since the setup is slick, steadying front with the left hand was needed. Started 1st ten-shot clip spent messing w/ the scope to get it near zero at 40 yds. The second clip went to paper, 2 groups of five each. Rifle was shouldered w/ front hand steadied on a sock of rice. Started zeroing scope at 190 bar, JSB 15.9 gr. , stopped at 150 bar.Seems the rice works pretty well, better than my sand-filled rabbit ears. Both groups fit in a dime.

Since the cotton sock is pretty slick against the wood, I’m thinking of using some neoprene wet suit repair(liquid rubber) painted on the fabric to add some friction. Still, a way cheap way to make bags.

Thanks y’all. AA guns are sweet. One of the squirrels I nailed yesterday with it was about 60 yds away and 40-50 ft, up an oak tree. Once I heard the “Thwack!” it jumped straight into the air and fell spread eagle, quite dramatic. Second one was about 40 yds and the groundhog, shot from back-through spine & vitals was only about 20 yds., halfway out of it’s hole. Three shots, three rodents.
The clip on the AA is fast, easy to load and doesn’t damage the pellets at all, unless the advancing mechanism needs adjusting. I’d recommend the s510 to anyone, unless they were looking for very high FPE.

Shoots much better than with the bag in front of the muzzle. Plus, now I don’t have to keep filling the sock and deal with the piles of rice in the yard and picking it outta my ears.
I bet a dead squirrel would make a hell of a rest. oooo, gotta make a squirrel bag! (without the guts)
W/ the AA s510, I popped two squirrels and a good sized groundhog at work. No pics though. But the AA .22 is quite capable of nailing big rodents.
It is with great interest I’ve been reading about “putting bags in the front of the rifle to improve accuracy”….however,
I wouldn’t recommend putting anything in front of the muzzle, as this will almost always impair accuracy. By the time the pellet makes it through the rice, sand, walnut shells, or white sand, it will most certainly have deviated in it’s trajectory!
I suggest placing the bag under the FOREARM to steady your aim!
Further, never place the entire rifle within the bag of white sand, or other such filler. Old Goat advises me this will not only affect accuracy, but overall rifle performance as well. Note that Ted from Madison always places his bags under the forearm!!!
Synsops advised me he used his ex-girl friends old breast augmentation gel bags for rifle rests, but one burst, and the salt water filler rusted his barrel.

Problem is with rice that after a while (some weeks) the rice starts to get smaller and your bag will shrink in size.
Also, it will start smelling bad when it gets in contact with water.
Sand is much more stabel and will not shrink!
An alternative to rice to solve those issues is crushed walnut media. More $$ though :wink:.
Thanks Hoot, does sound like a better skid-beater. Anything that saves some dough to “invest” in more gun stuff is worth a try. I have some of the neoprene on hand to repair…well neoprene. It is pricey to coat a big area.
Kazzz, I tried sand on a bunch of air guns, in proper sand bags. I wouldn’t use sand in a sock-too porous. Anyway, for some reason my guns doesn’t group as well. For the .22 mag Marlin powderburner, it’s deadly. But, even with a loose fill, it seems too stiff/hard for the pellet rifles. Tried a bunch of holds, too. Maybe I’m doing something wrong?
Anyone know if gel bags work or even exist?

Go to home depot and grab a spray can of “Tool Dip-it”.
That scuba repair rubber is overpriced. The spray can of Dip-It is much cheaper and dries to a very nice semi-tacky finish. I used it for a gun handle once and it worked out quite well and wore well too.
It’s intended use is to coat tool handles and it comes in colors.
