How to clean your Matador with Ballistol? Ted?
Hey guys .
I have not yet cleaned my Matadors and I feel like its time to do it.
I know there is a bunch of ways its possible, but I have read somewhere that Ted in Madison have a way to do it with Ballistol and it only take couple shots to get the accuracy back.
Help please =) Tell me how to do it properly.

I use to pull the rear breech block and push a patched Dewey rod through the front breech block and barrel/shroud assembly.
I tried the week wacker thing and I could never get a good end melted on it. I like to pull a large patch thru and I usually ended up pulling the end off and having a patch stuck in the bore. Fishing line needed a plastic straw to get it past the baffles.

Tim doesn’t have the crown saver listed on his website. You have to call him to order one. Mine was around $10-$12, shipping included.
It is one of the best air gun accessories that I have bought! The plastic tube can be slid over almost all of the inner nylon cord and I can easily glide it past the shroud’s baffles, thru the barrel and out of the loading port once the gun is cocked. Around every 200 shots, I routinely pull some patches thru the Matador until they come out clean.
Every time that I use it, I am amazed with how dirty the first couple of patches are! I keep plenty of silicone on the probe’s O rings and I think that the excess silicone is being blown into the barrel. JSB pellets might have some lube on them also. All I know for sure is, after 200 shots, the first couple of patches look nasty.
I currently don’t use any bore solvents or lubes. In the past, I have tried them and it took around 50 shots for me to get the bore “seasoned” and back to shooting normal.
I am going to order some Ballistol and give it a try. You never know!
This is not an entirely original idea. I made a cleaning string to clean my airwolf. It should work w/ edgun. The advantage of this is that it does not take anywhere near the effort to pull through the bore as a boresnake and no disassembly is required. It may help you guys from tweaking your barrels out of alignment.
I started with a piece of nylon trimmer line. Cut it long – shave one end to a sharp point. The other end is heated up until soft (with a match) and make a “blob”. Next modify a couple .177 pellets by drilling down through them so they can slide down the trimmer line and prevented by falling off by the “blob”. I used 2, but no reason you could not use 3. It would provider a longer bearing / wiping area. I thread these onto the nylon line. This creates a .177 caliber plug. The function of the plug is same as a cleaning jag, except it is pulled, not pushed. The .177 pellets are the only precision part of this setup and they are virtually free. I have not tried .20, think it would be too tight.
Ok that is the assembly of the device. In use I do the following. The wolf has baffels in its shroud. I found a plastic drinking straw that is able to fit through the baffles. I insert the straw through the muzzle and guide it through the baffles until it contacts the barrel. This acts as a guide. (the trimmer cord is curled and will not make it past the baffles without a guide). next take a cleaning patch, and impale it on the sharp end of the nylon line and alow it to slide down to the plug. If you want to use a solvent, now is the time to apply. I use rem oil or I use them dry. Insert the sharp end of the string into the breach and feed it in until the sharp comes out the muzzle / straw guide . thats it – pull it through. The .177 pellet plug size seems to work for me.
Incredibly simple and cheap. I have found that cloth patches intended for 22LR work without bunching. if a straw is too big for your baffles then slit it
Iagree with Kazz there`s no way I`m taking apart every cleaning.
I shoot a couple of cleaning pellets take off shroud and run a few
clean .22 mops w/tipton rod.wash and reuse mops.
Ted`s cleaning vid is from july 2010 so I`m sure his method is a bit different
now using Ballistol ps.just shot a sub.25″ 50yd w/Edgun pellets not conclusive
but I think they are good.more testing when weather permits
There is only one problem with the vid from Ted: if you shoot a lot, you’ll clean your barrel more often.
2 problems can occur with the R2(.5): the screws that lock the breech are not made to tighten and unscrew a lot..! Eventually the screws will not tighten up anymore.
Second problem is that with the R2(5) when you use a boresnake, the barrel can come of center.. So you’ll feel air coming out of your barrel/breech alignment place.
I’ve had these 2 problems already, I know OG had the barrel/breech problem too..
So be careful of you intend to clean a lot.
I now use only the .22 patches and shoot the first one with ballistol and behind 1 pellet.
Then I shoot 3 dry patches through with each time a pellet behind.
No differences with the boresnake concept, except no problems with breech screw or barrel.

which Balistol is he using? looks like there is lube, sportsman’s oil, and universal…

No Mark didn’t sell my Edgun! haven’t lost my mind just yet LOL!! I was talking to a couple guys about my 2.5 and there 3. I had a chance to buy a 3 and sell mine, but so far I haven’t done anything! mine is a laser why should I in my mind, but you know how that goes sometimes! I seen a post of Ted’s here on Tag that he was going to make a video just on Balistol cleaning, I am sure it is the same as we all do now just using ballitol for cleaning instead of other cleaners! I need to order some probably from PA and get some pellets to!

I to have pm’d Ted but haven’t heard back from him as of yet! I am interested to, from what I have read he and others are very impressed with this cleaning! with Ballistol! Also is there different types of Ballistol? thought I had seen some a while back but am not sure 😯

Maybe I got lucky – the nub I melted has stuck. Initially I used the melted blob to spread the patch to the bore, but it was not uniform or perfectly circular so was not happy with the results which is where the pellets came in to lengthen and uniform the portion of the patch being pressed to the bore. I have had some issues with the plug pulling right through the patch leaving the patch in the bore. Patch size and material is the trick. Cotton flannel patch for 22 LR. are just about perfect.
In my firearms I never had any luck cleaning with a looped patch. Takes hundreds of patches to clean the crap out. After getting fed up cleaning my 12 guage I had a revelation. I stuffed an entire sheet of paper towel into a breach and pushed the plug through with a stout aluminum cleaning rod. The bore came out mirror clean in a single pass. Cleaning the barrel went from being a 10 -15 minute chore to being able to clean the whole gun in 5 minutes. Now I only use a looped patch after cleaning to apply light protective oil to the bore.
