LW barrel blank quality
I just talked to Drum about sending him my LW barrel blank to get some work done on it and he told me that the barrel blank is possibly rubbish.
What’s up with that?

@oldgoat you could ask Dyotat100, he offered to do mine, but for now im looking into local guys.
About 2 years ago, I got a BSA 25 cal blank from Drum and I wanted another one. He told me that Gamo won’t let BSA spend any money on their barrel making equipment and that BSA’s barrel quality has went down the crapper. Drum told me that, starting around August 2010, BSA barrels are not what they use to be. He said that he got a 500 BSA barrel order in and that they were so bad that he had to send the whole batch back.
I bought a new old stock BSA 25 cal Lonestar just for the barrel. I hope that it is one of the older “good” barrels. The barrel has been at a not so local machinist for over 7 weeks and he still hadn’t got to it.
I went and picked it up today and I have to find some one else to do the needed work.
I have a 22 and a 25 cal non choked LW barrel blanks on order that will need machined also. I use to have Jim Gaska do my work for me but, he is swamped and I need to find a good machinist to send them to.
I’m about to try out what my .177 BSA barrel can do in a few weeks.

Funny because i’ve heard the BSA blanks have been of not so great quality… Didn’t some tuner recently send back something like fifty BSA blanks because they were crap?
I guess the “best” barrel is the one you have in stock and can reap more profits from… 😉 😯
I have a new (october/november 2011 batch) match LW barrel on my USFT and it’s sub 1/2″ five shot groups at 50 yards in 177 cal… Haven’t pushed a pellet thru it since the accuracy is better than acceptable.

@moneyshot , if you know some place/places here in Eu, where i can get it done cheap, please let me know.
i could be pretty sure that if you can give precise dimensions to a local machine shop, and im sure a proper lathe man could do it.
you may have to set the bushings yourself, however…

The problem is finding a cheap place here in the Europe. Im still looking at some places locally, but so far no luck. Drum’s was the first that came in mind, so I asked him.

ive a barrel from drum.
he is fairly famous for making top quality barrels, and the bore of LW blanks has been too flawed for his taste, for him to put his name on it, i guess.
unless you go the full nine and get a bsa from him, theres WAY cheaper places to get a blank properly turned.
Two problems I have encountered with LW barrels.
One they vary from batch to batch in interior dimensions, some as small at .251 in 25 and as large as 2549.
Second, some are small in the breech end and get bigger in the interior and then smaller again at the choke. Unless you can cut the breech end off so that you have a progressivelly smaller barrel interior from breech to muzzle you have a throw away.
My last two barrels are very good, the one I cut the choke off is as good as any PB barresl I have owned for cast bullets with the exception of a krieger I put on my Sharps Borschardt.

i think i may have the mystery about the “rouge bsa blanks”.
hit em with JB and break in well.
while mine has thus far been a fantastic performer out as far as i can shoot, i conditioned, lapped and broke in the barrel well.
the problem lies in the tiny ridges and tooling marks that seem to run the CIRCUMFERENCE of the bore… 😕
those need polished and smoothed somehow, or id imagine the barrel may well be worth a shite.
dave, did you notice any of these marks?
