What top hat is this?
Helping a buddy of mine set up a talon ss he bought used. Who makes these and what are suppose to do or not do?
I’m familiar with the Condor valves and such; I’ve got two of them. But have spent very little time around a Talon SS.
Another thing that surprises me is how loud they are. I shot a Talon with an 18″ barrel and a Bull’s Eye Bill frame extender and it was shooting the same pellet at about the same FPS and I don’t recall it being this loud.
What are you guys that own the SS doing to your rig to keep it urban backyard friendly and still get 20+ FPE ?

GTBJ – No, the top hat stayed the same even after shooting it. I tried putting o-rings under the top hat but the velocities stayed about the same. Taking the hammer weight out made a HUGE difference and lowered the FPS substantially, both test were with the power wheel on zero.
The report is quite enough under 600fps but starts “Poping” at about 625. At 850 she BANGS!.
I told Tom, the guns owner, we will eventually get the gun where he wants it.
All it takes is money. 😆
I might get to do some chrony testing this evening and maybe a small window of opportunity of group shooting tomorrow afternoon. Going to a gun show to look at everytihing I can’t afford and then spending some much needed and wanted quality time with the family. 😉

nice little hammer weight… did the top hat settle down to the original gap after shooting it?
who was the old owner? perhaps he was a bit of a home machinist… anyway, he should be able to give you the ins and out of what has been done to it
mrnewbie – I had to put the o ring there to space the fill adapter high enough to keep the fill adapter from pushing in the top hat so I could bleed off pressure in the fill whip. (had to shim the fill adapter EVEN HIGHER 😮 as explained below)
Update since original post……
I took the valve off the bottle to see what mods if any had been done if any. The nut that holds the spring was juuuuust about off. When I bled the tank, the stem “free floated” since the spring didn’t put pressure on it. I have no clue as to if the parts are stock or not.
When I reassembled the valve the top hat was even further out ( thus the 215″ measurement 😯 ) now I had to use 6 Jim Gaska Etac shims (left over from another project) AND the green o ring to get the fill adaptor off the top hat. 😯 😯
Upon further inspection, I found this
in front of the hammer.
I took it out, and the 18.1g JSB went from 850fps to 257fps
😆 😆
I then turned up the power wheel until I was getting 750 FPS (23fpe).
Shot a few more times to see where my shot string was going and it looks like with the unknown brand of non adjustable top hat 220psi is a good start.
I didn’t do a shot string because it was coming up on midnight and I was going starling plinking this morning ( 4 KIA )
So if I haven’t bored everyone to tears and you’ve not switched forums I’m going to do as GTBJ recommends and get a new bonnet/top hat assembly and hang a shroud on it and report my findings as soon as they are learned.

is this .070 in inches?
converted to mm would be very litlle space left behind top hat… 😕
Just shim it to your .070 or so from the back side..

holy monkey butt…. well that’s one reason she is so loud, it’s wasting Air!
can you pull the stem out? if so I would get a small rubber grommet, place it around the stem and replace it in the valve.
if something like that doesn’t end up working you can always order a new stem from a/f

is that t/h a one pice? doesn’t look like there is any screws on it for adjusting, or can I just not see them…

Well some one at some time was going for max power, they did not care about waisted air…
That nut almost off, less return spring pressure = more air.
Custom tophat at .200+ = more air.
Custom hammer weight..even a cut out for the spring…nice job. = more air
Someone was power hungry, and they knew what they were doing. Trying to make a low flow into a high flow…
Just get that valve stem taken care of, shims in front, behind..cut .100 off the darn thing..whatever it takes to get it in reasonable settings.
Ck the little delrin piece it pops into inside the valve (valve seat?)
You know what you are doing..no doubt..don’t see where more money comes into play
