Q:

Garage target shooting

I’ve been really excited to get out and shoot my Talon SS, but time has been at a premium lately. The neighbors have a trampoline set up next to our common backyard wall, and I didn’t want the kids to start jumping, and see me in the back with a scary black gun, so the yard was not the best option.

I decided to set up a 7 yard “range” in my garage and use some wood scraps and old steel Jeep bumpers as a backstop.

My scope is a Burris Timberline 4.5-14x, and it focuses to 7 yards just great. However, the elevation adjustment ran out before I could zero at such a short range. Thankfully, the reticle has a few has hash marks, and a not too thick outer post. I wound up using the top of the post as an aiming point, and it worked pretty well. I kept it set at about 7x.

I had a Tasco Varmint 6-24x on this rifle, but it wouldn’t focus under 15 yards or so, and it was overkill for a .177 blistering along at 620 fps.

I was using some Crosman “Premier” hollowpoints that I got as part of a trade, and had a partial tin to waste.

Target on left is sighting in the scope, target on right is when I had it dialed in pretty well. The right target has about two dozen pellets through it. Nothing spectacular for this range, but it was fun to do some shooting.

The rifle is using CO2, and is shooting 7.9 gr pellets in the 620fps range with the 12″ barrel. The Talon SS is all factory OEM, but I have a couple of nice goodies coming for it from a member on this forum that I recently made a trade with.

P.S. If anyone has a micrometer tank that they aren’t using, send me a message please.

That’s why my guns have to be SUPER quiet. 😕

I have a 10 yard range in the house! It’s fun with open sights.

Nice Jerry! Cool head prevails.

I have a 8 yard range in he garage. It’s a lot of fun to shoot when it’s not too hot.

Wait, I heard something!

Well gee Jerry when there is nothing between your ears, there is a whole lot of whistling and wizzing going on, I know cause my cousins, who were on my mothers side and also my fathers side used to complain all the time of eery noises in their heads.

It is a wise thing to NEVER EVER EVER let the neighbors see or hear you shoot.

Suckers will lie all the time about being shot or having pellets come in there yard.

Especially kids… I had a neighborhood kid once claim that a bullet from us shooting went whizing by his head. Well on that occasion, we were not even shooting, he heard some deer hunters nearby and just figured it was us.

A couple weeks later, we have the .62 Woodsman out and we’re shooting it as a shotgun using bird shot. As we’re wrapping things up, this kid and his dad come strolling into my backyard. His dad relates that his son claims to have heard a bullet whiz past his ear. Well, the kid lives a little under half a mile away and there’s nothing but solid dense forest between us, rolling terain and my 9″ thick target wall.

His dad was very polite and familiar with bird shot and airguns. After asking if we had shot any high power rifles (as in PBs) and looking at the groups on the target wall (and the clean back of the wall), he apologized for the intrusion. I asked if he wanted to try the Woodsman and offered for him and his son to come by for some shooting but he had to go. He then told me he was a LEO. Turns out he’s with the capital police.

I’m glad I answered his concerns without ever calling his kid a little liar and getting off to a bad start! I never did mention that his kid seemed to hear bullets all the time…I think he realized that…

Been there done that …LOL

try a target something like this and shoot one time at each target, lets you see what you are dong a little better.

That is a great idea, and thanks for the image file!
