Helium

Well helium shortage is here. I went to my local gas supply to buy a couple of stainless steel wire brushes today. Told him I still have a 1000 psi in the tank that you lent me of helium. He said it’s like gold and told me to keep it. There is no more over the counter sales of it and they took all his tanks last month.

So i called another place and they said they will exchange it only. No new sales of helium. Price is $169.00 now. I paid $42.00 when I got mine like 8 months ago.

Oh, I know about helium’s lower density, and it’s ability to move more easily through tight spaces than air.That’s why I was wondering if it was a higher volume of gas per trigger pull pushing that pellet to give…a higher FPE? That must have been a higher velocity. Kind of like a valve mod.?

Its also to do with the speed of sound in air and in helium.

By the laws of physics, we should not be able to shoot at supersonic speeds using room temperature air, this is because the flow of air can’t be faster than the speed of sound in that gas.

The speed of sound in helium is much higher which allows the helium to flow much faster than air meaning more velocity.

Sorry for the capitals, Jerry. I’m trying to learn patience, ..but it’s taking too long.
I’ll search for the chrono data. It’s just that I find the idea very interesting, in a gas law kind of way.

I don’t think anyone here on this thread is interested in giving a physics or mechanical properties lesson.

Get on google and look up NASA’s high speed “guns” that use heated hydrogen. Some of the links and descriptions have excellent information on why helium and hydrogen to an even greater extent can be used for higher velocities than air.

So, has ANYBODY HERE ever filled their air gun tank with helium and shot over a chronograph to compare velocities and accuracy with air or nitrogen?

So that (obviously) was a jump in velocity with helium.This is fun to think about.
I recall with those “pumpkin cannons” that it was all about the VOLUME of air pushing the pumpkin projectiles, and not the pressure. I recall that being said. As in my previous reply, helium has a much lower density than air.
Do you think it’s about more volume of gas behind the pellet?

Took my .308 from aound 250 fpe to 414. With current setup it would probably make around 500 fpe. Not sure how it would group at those numbers.

I guess what the question should be is..
Is velocity and accuracy better?
Otherwise, it’s just an interesting thought.
