R3 22 caliber Long
I saw Samurai’s thread here and I was sure to check out my R3 when I got it. The UPS website said that my package would be delivered by the end of the day. I wasn’t going to wait that long!
I called UPS up and they told me that the delivery guy would be at Wally World in 5 minutes. I almost made it. As I drove up, I saw him leaving. He saw me behind him, pulled over and said; “Hi Tedd, I’ve got a box for you that I have set aside; I’ve been waiting for you to catch me!”
Such service! When “Flash” sees my name on an Edgun sized box, he knows that I will be tracking him down! I told him about Samurai’s fucked up Edgun; he wanted to be sure that mine was OK.
WOW! Didn’t look good! Cut the box open and the gun was fine. Flash thought that the newest Edgun “was really sweet”. He likes the Walnut stocks better than the black ones. I still think that Edguns are supposed to be black!
I had to replace the front trigger screw with a longer M3 X .5 mm pitch screw that I rounded the threaded end over. I still couldn’t get the trigger the way that I like. I had to remove the trigger and hammer housing, remove the 2 front screws, that secure the trigger rail to the hammer housing, and turn the trigger block 2 turns in to get the trigger the way that I like. I like very light 1st stage and then a light 2nd stage let off.
After a couple of hours of getting the trigger set, the Harris bipod mounted and the scope installed, I loaded up and went to the range. I had trouble sighting in at 50 yards. I finally found out that my setup was shooting really high. I had to really crank the scope up to get zeroed at 50 yards. I know that my Hawke 4026 scope is almost maxed out as set right now. I will look into that.
The wind was supposed to be calm today. It wasn’t. It was 5-6 mph but, it was swirling all around and was almost impossible to adjust for. This is my 50 yard target. I don’t know how many shots that I got on a fill, I am thinking 80 plus? I also had chrony issues. The first fill seemed to be OK, I pulled a couple of patches thru the barrel halfway into the 2nd string and the crony said that I was shooting at 1200 fps! Could be time for a new chrony.
My Russian fill started out at 914 fps and took a few shots until it dropped into the low 890s. The second fill started in the high 890s and was mostly around 890. It jumped around some and I think that I need to turn the reg down a little and up the HST a little.
At 100 yards, I thought that the 22 cal pellets were more affected by the wind than a 25 pellet. I had hoped to do a side to side comparison of the 22 long and the 25 long. Didn’t happen! I am fitting a BSA barrel to my R3 25 long and I made a fitment error on it. I couldn’t get the 25 cal pellet to seat.
I always take the day off and shoot my new Edgun! The winds have been crazy here all spring.so after 2 hours at the range, I went to work. I want to do a comparison of the 22 and 25s. Right now, I think that I like the 25 cal better.

I didn’t know about the box. I have the pro chrony and the light kit. You don’t want the Pal. Works great, rare to get a error.
Hey Dyotat, thanks for the tip. Should I get the remote control box also? It is around $80.
I think that i have the barrel indexed now. I won’t know for sure untill I get to the range this weekend.
Six more weeks until I get the Hart barrels, I hope!

Competition electronics pro chrono is the one to get. Does 9 99 shot strings. You have to get the cable to hook it to a computer. Light kit is also nice.
So did you get the barrel clocked to where it needs to be? Hope it shoots better then your last BSA barrel.
Lots of happy new Edgun owners this week. Question for you. Can you post Close up pic of your bipod and mount stud in stock. Im debating adding weaver rail and doing Harris swivel adapter to hinged bipod or just sticking with what has worked well for many.
I would second the CED M2. I thought I was the only one using one. It’s a “some assembly required” outfit but has some great features.

Chronograph; – get yourself a CED M2……….. 😉 US made and a bit flimsy but stores and transfers your strings into Excel via USB.
Trigger adjustment: So it was not only about adjusting the screws then….???
What trigger weight have you achieved as of now ?

Kazz, I have the BSA barrel on the R3 25 long, not the brand new R3 22 long. Last week, I had a chance to try the BSA barrel on the 25. When sighted in at 50 yards, it shot to the right at 100 yards. The bore is not exactly centered in the barrel and will shoot farther to the right as the range increases. I had a BSA barrel on my R2.5 25 cal and it was more accurate than the stock LW barrel. I had to index the BSA barrel on the R2.5 also but, the R2.5 was easier to do. All that I had to do was loosen up the 2 barrel clamps and rotate the barrel ¼ turn and then tighten it back down. I want to see how the BSA barrel will do on the improved R3’s barrel mounting setup
The barrel breech end is threaded M12 X 1.25 mm pitch. I needed to index the barrel ¼ turn counter clockwise to change the horizontal pellet impact shift to a vertical one. I figured that 1.25 mm is .049” so I had to remove .0123 from the barrel’s breech end face to allow it to be rotated ¼ turn more counter clockwise in before it bottomed out in front breech block.
I didn’t want to go too far so, I took .008 off the first time and tried that. I needed to remove another .004 and after doing that, I forgot to remove the burr in the lead in that I had from machining the barrel’s face down. When I got to the range, the pellet couldn’t be pushed past the burr and into the barrel so, I didn’t get to do a side to side 100 yard wind shift comparison between the 22 and 25.
The 25 cal JSB pellet has a better BC so it doesn’t drop as far at longer range and wind doesn’t seem to affect it as much, especially at longer ranges. I hope to shoot them side by side this weekend.
The long versions are slightly more muzzle heavy and not as well balanced as the standard length versions. It is not that big of a difference though. I like the extra shots that the long provides. I haven’t counted the number of regulated shots in either but, I would guess that the 25 gets close to 70 and the 22 has to be at least 80 and probably close to 90-100. That 50 yard target had a lot of pellets in the same hole that didn’t add to the overall group size. I could have counted the number of regulated shots, just didn’t. I was more concerned with the shot to shot variation and the extreme spread.
I need to buy a new chrony and I will look for one that will keep track of a 100 shot string and then download it to a laptop.

To adjust the trigger, I take a longer threaded M3 screw, round off the end of it, so it will slide easily on the trigger rod bar and put it in the front trigger screw hole. I remove the rear screw. I turn the front screw in until the gun won’t cock and then back it out until I get the creep and let off the way that I like it.
I did that on the new 22 and the front screw would sometimes slide off of the trigger rod bar and get stuck. Th trigger rod bar set too high in the trigger housing and needed moved down some. I had to remove the trigger block/hammer block assembly and take the 2 side screws off of the hammer block. I then rotated the trigger block in 2 turns, shortening the trigger rod length. The shorter trigger rod makes the trigger rod bar set lower it the trigger housing. I then had to turn the front trigger screw out and start the adjustment over.

Hi Tedd, glad to hear edgun arrived safe and sound. Question for you. As stated at this point your leaning towards the .25 as the prefered gun. I am considering the .25 but would like your thoughts on the balance of the gun between standard .22 and long .25. Is the valve same for both guns or is the .25 beefer and last what is the difference in sound level between the two. Thanks buddy for all the help and posts you bring to this here mad house!

Tedd, glad to know your gun arrived safely. If you have time, please give a little bit detail on how you adjust the trigger step-by-step (even better with pictures :)). My trigger gets really stiff in the first shot if let the gun sits overnight. Please let us know the result of your comparison. I am waiting for my .25 R3 long to come, which was ordered 5 months ago…

I began to make a rail with incline to the barrel of 0.5 degrees, in order to have as much adjusting on scope as possible.

Nice little review OG, but.. why almost immediately adding a new barrel? Why not use the stand Edgun barrel to settle in?

good but at twice the price?I see the Pro on sale pretty often @ Midway.
