Q:

R3 25 cal long with BSA barrel

I went to the range today to try out the R3 25 long that I put a 25 cal BSA barrel on. I was getting ready to leave when I saw some 45 Colt casings laying around. They measure .478” wide X 1.275” tall. I set them up at 100 yards. The wind picked up after the 4th shot. I should have stopped at 4!

Nice to see it’s working good for you. It wasn’t a hard job doing the barrel, just nerve racking knowing it is not replaceable. So you got the barrel clocked to where the curve is on the bottom right?

I just machined a FX smooth twist today for a condor. Puzzling how they came up with that design. Not a cheap barrel either, cost as much as my .451 Douglas barrel.

The added mass definitely helps buck the wind.Wish JSB made some 21-22 grain 22 pellets to match their 18 grain sister. The added mass with small cross sectional density of 22 would increase downrange grouping.

Crappy pic but, I think that it shows how the 22 is more affected by the wind than the 25 is.

I started in the lower right hand corner and shot right to left and then would go up a row. I tried to wait between gusts and didn’t always get it right.

I had cleaned the BSA barrel before I went to the range and I shot 20-30 shots sighting it in. The first 2 lower right hand groups were then shot. I wonder if the barrel was getting dirty for the rest of the shots? The barrel only has about 200 shots thru it and might need a few hundred more to settle in.

Yes, I shot groups with the R3 22 long and the R3 25 long. I will post them when I get a chance. The 25 shot tighter groups than the 22.

The wind was variable and I had some nice 4 shot groups with one flier in each. The wind didn’t affect the 25 to the same degree that it did the 22.

I prefer the 25 caliber over the 22. I have swaging equipment coming in and a .224” and a .257” Hart barrel on order. I want to try them on my Matadors. I am going to try shooting swaged Keith nose, flat base bullets in the Hart barrels. If the swaged bullets don’t turn out, I will probably sell the 22 long. I have a R3 25 standard ordered.

Thats some mighty fine shootin 😯 I`m guessing your pretty happy
w/BSA barrel.I`m kind of wishing I ordered a .25 R3 instead of .22
Both would be nice but a stretch $wise. That barrel is from a Lonestar
isn`t it ? Maybe I could get a Lonestar used and down the road get a
R3 .25 I`ve never shot a .25 .Did you get to shoot any groups?
