Q:

Vented my TSS frame. The results are

disappointing. I have a stock TSS with a vented front barrel bushing. I have a gtbj short shroud and a Subssonic gen 2 insert to help quiet the gun. Both work great. But hey, quieter is better, right? Some TAG posts suggest venting the frame does help, others, not so much. Sooo, thought I’d give it a go.

I drilled 2 1/8 inch holes in the frame, between the 2 barrel bushings, under the front grip. One hole approx 3/4 of an inch forward of the rear bushing, the other approx 1 1/4 inches forward of the rear bushing.

Started with a 2500psi fill, power wheel 0, shooting JSB exact jumbo 18.1 gr. Shot 3 times with both the shroud and insert before I drilled the holes, and 3 shots with each after I drilled the holes. I measured the results with my uncalibrated Radio Shack digital sound meter, positioned approximately 30 inches in front of the muzzle, and 30 inches to the left, at muzzle height.

I achieved a one decibel reduction in sound for my efforts. Wasn’t expecting a whole lot, but one fucking decibel??? C’mon man.

Some TAG posts suggest venting the frame actually makes the gun louder, at least from the shooters perspective, due to air escaping from under the front grip. I tested this by placing the meter approximately 2″ from the cheek weld location, and shot 3 times before and after the mod. The results of this test were unexpected. The noise level actually dropped 3 decibels after I vented the frame. Go figure.

Not what I was hoping for 🙁 , but I enjoyed the process 🙂 .

Cheers!

Nate,

You’re a hard man to please.

I would have thought the holes were a bit large but you produced good positive results.

From my memory too, 🙄 3 Db is reducing the noise by 1/2 and is also considered a noticeable amount.Your other 1Db reduction reading, while not being considered noticeable to the ear, is proof positive that you made some improvement.

Your measurements and methods are valuable information
Keep up the good work and great input to this forum.

Thanks,

That doesn’t sound (no pun intended) so great. Hey did you say you were using the Subsonic insert WITH the GTBJ shroud? I’m familiar with the insert and was wondering how you were using both at the same time. Or was it either or?

Agh ok never mind. I reread and I know what you meant. It’s been a long day already. I

a 3 decibel reduction is half the sound pressure, if I remember correctly
