Barrel Nitriding

So after a quick search of this forum I found one person who seems mildly obsessed with recommending some dry film lubricant. A run on the google shows one thread where a bunch of chimpanzees who have no clue what they are talking about are chastising someone interested in trying it.

So now that a few years have passed has anyone here finally tried getting their barrel nitrided?

All of which are considerably slower than today’s current formula… 😉

Winged keels and such is what I would call lipstick on a pig when a catamaran will simply go faster right out of the box. The traditionalists (monohull lovers) were finally proven to be true luddites…

Interesting topic. I checked out the links and it seems neither refer to the process/product the linked OP refered to. Also, it is true that the most accurate airguns don’t appear to be using any of the processes mentioned, but should they?

Before the America’s Cup winner had a winged keel or laminar flow inducing coatings, the fasted 12 meter boats in the world didn’t use either of those advances. Now, you better have both just to stay in the game…

Of course, lots of other tricks/advancements were tried and proved pointless. I expect someone will have to make an excellent shooter and then coat/treat it and prove any value. That’s going to be expensive so us chimps will just wait and see!

Many of us know what it is.

But we also know it is not used in the most accurate airgun barrels used in competition.

There are many processes that are used but are not suited for airguns.

Lets back up a second.

In the link to the yellow forum is TiN. (titanium nitride) Thats the CLOSEST to whats now referred to as “nitriding” but that particular process IS a coating because you’re adding titanium nitride to the surface. Its usually done with vapor deposition IIRC. Actual NITRIDING, also called nitrocarburizing, is typically done in a cyanide salt bath although doing it in a gaseous environment is becoming increasingly common especially due to environmental converns. You’re not adding to the bore by depositing metal, you’re doing material conversion diffusing nitrogen in the crystalline structure of the iron. Also just FYI if done correctly it won’t alter your bore’s level of surface finish.

Anyway never mind. Long story short I was interested to hear if anyone here had any experience with it as applied to air rifles, and since it appears nobody actually even knows what it is I think that answered that question. Thanks everyone who participated.

The blacknitride link says the treated surface will be rougher after application… Quite the opposite of what the objective is yes? Sure it can be polished but why all that work for an unproven gain?

The wmdguns link specifically states that they DO NOT COAT THE BORE of the barrel… I don’t think a special coating on the outside will help accuracy… 😉

I’ve read about boron nitride treated bullets on forums that have long distance world record setting rifle reviews oddly none of them have the barrels treated…

I think it would be very common for the high accuracy crowd if it was beneficial, or at least mentioned as an experiment. And the place I read about this stuff is all about highlighting the experiments that work and cut against the common thinking in rifle technology…

Most military applications are done due to harsh conditions, rapid firing, poor cleaning methods, not typically done for accuracy, more for wear.

I’m not trying to crap on your idea but the links you posted are in conflict with the concepts you posted.

That being said this boron nitride coating concept could be applied to pellets and that might actually produce a gain in accuracy… 😉

Ok for the last time nitriding, as its applied currently to firearm bores, IS NOT PLATING. Its a surface conversion. What does it do? It radically increases hardness and lubricity. On firearms its a well established way to increase accuracy FYI.

Well, I’m not into chastising, but………What will plating an air rifle barrel’s bore accomplish? Rust proofing! PB barrels bore are abused and burned out quickly by how hot the round is loaded and makes perfectly good sense to plate, but then it only prolongs the in·ev·i·ta·ble. There are no hot rounds I know of for Air guns?

Soft lead or plastic is likely hardly ever to wear out one air rifle barrel. Cleaning does more harm, actually then shooting.

I use Finish line kryTech on my pellets, which coats them lightly with moly. I can buy a lot of KryTech for the cost of nitride plating.

Buy all means try nitride plating your air rifles bore, it could surprise or disappoint you, I don’t think anyone here has tried it ‘Yet’. It’s definitely a good idea, just needs funding, research and development.

History repeats it’s self, I’m another chimp using a dry lube, not nec·es·sar·i·ly recommending using it, just know it’s cheap and prevents bore rust also!
