Stretched Talon SS

Doug made a bushing to press fit the two halves together, and then a vented bushing for the end of the barrel to center it. He also vented the original front bushing, so it really has three bushings now, altho the third one does not screw to the frmae and only insures the barrel was centered when it is press fit together.

He also squared the end of the tubes to get a tight fit and then cut a groove in the seam so that I could fill it in to blend them together with Accraglas Gel.

He used what ever color of locktight that they press fit cylinder sleeves into engines and then press fit the two halves together with his press, it is not coming apart.

Once it got it here, I mixed Accraglass Gel up and filled the seam and the bevel on the top and bottom of the rails, and the bushing screw holes in the piece that was added.

After letting it set up overnight, I draw filed and sanded the tube to blend it in so that it looks like one piece.

I will paint it with Alumahyde, but right now it only has a light coat of flat black on it to test it to see if the seam can be seen.

The end cap is a air stripper and has two set screw due to the pressure I am shooting, 3400 PSI. I have temporarely put in baffes for a air stripper inside and 3 inches from the end of the barrel due to the fact that this comination of slug and high HPA pressure seems to favor a air stripper.

I would eventually like to have a long insert made for it.

I also used it with the droop adjustable scope mount that BKL makes. I wanted to sight the gun in to be at its lowest adjustment at 65 yards, and it was able to do that, it gives me 48 inches of adjustment for long range.

And that mount caused problems.

After I put it all together it would not group as well as before, I tried all sorts of comibnations of hammers and springs and PW settings, I even put my 2×7 Burris on it and it grouped well, but I thought it was the hammer spring combo I was using instead of a scope problem.

Finally about 6 PM yesterday, after taking it apart about 6 or 7 times, a light bulb came on and I realized the scope was not opitcally centered and that was my accuracy problem.

So I dialed in 24 inches to put me in the center of my adjustment range and fired at a large piece of cardboard at 40 yards, and guess what, it gouped 8 shots into .8.

It is a wonderful piece of Kit and puts frames with stripped out holes to good use. This frame that I got the tube from had the side bushing holes stripped out, then I redrilled and tapped them to 1/4-24 and used it for a year or two and they stripped out.

I considered just drillng the other side of the frame, but had this idea of a stretched talon in the back of my head for a long time.
