Q:

New Talon SS Owner

Got my Talon SS 177 Co2 a couple of months ago. Was able to hit nickels at 50 yards after sorting thru various pellets. It hates Kodiaks! Loves JSB lites! In my 10 m backyard, its almost as accurate as my FWB 300S using match H&N pellets. Hole in hole most of the time with occasional flyer. Its louder than I expected so turned wheel to zero. Its shooting 580 fps with H&N hollow points – great for backyard pest birds. Today, I will receive my spinlock tank. Come on UPS Guy!! Cant wait to see what it does with Kodiaks at higher velocities. Weird that it hated Kodiaks on CO2?? 3 inch groups at 50 yards. Hpong to hit 70 yard targets using the Kodiaks or JSB heavies.

Pw at 4. Start at 2800 psi. 850 fps kodiak lubed w pellgunoil. new baffle. Gun rested on bags front and back. Lubed valve. Gun is rear heavy. Front floats alot. Horrible group. Removed baffle.
Horrible. Lots of muzzle bounce. Added bipod. Better but 2 inch group. Change to jsb heavy unlubed. Not great. After 15 shots dp is at 2700. Now jsb 8.44. wind variable 3 to 8 mph
Group Okish? 1.5 inch group.
After 25 total shots dp at 2550. Jsb at 902. Kodiak at 845. Went back to kodiaks. Not great. 3 inch. Removed cap. Still 2 inch group 3 shots. Scope and mount ok. Now jsb 8.44 1 inch group. Pellets curving right. After 36 shots dp at 2300. Jsb again 5 shots 3/4 inch. Wind died for a few min. Then picked up. Replaced cap. Nice! 4 shots 1/2 inch. Dp at 2150. Predictable bullseye! Vel at 850. Now kodiak. 7 shots 1.5 inch. After 17  More shots dp at 1950. 765 fps. Back to jsb. Wind variable 5 to 8. Last few shots erratic due to wind.

Built my first baffle. All home depot stock stuff. 3 inch long 7/8 in. diam. spring, 5/16 in. thick 1 inch diam. plastic washer with 1/4 in hole, 1.5 inch long 5/8 in diam spring (with tape to center it), 2nd plastic washer, then endcap. This creates 1 long chamber, and 2 short chambers. WOW! On PW 4 (2400 fill), its quieter than when I had it on CO2 PW 0. Shot hole in hole groups in my 10 m yard with kodiaks. Will chronie it soon. Trying to maximize shot count and still zing kodiaks at 800 plus (177) for long distance (70 yd) shooting. Getting used to the pump. Its not so bad if you top off often. Looking for that magic spot (pw setting, fill pressure, etc.). Being a tinkerer – its good entertainment!

Hey ssshooter, wind was variable to 8 mph. Thanks for the 0 pw hint at 1500 psi. Will try it tomorrow in my backyard. Yeah I noticed the vibration at pw 8. Also, pressure dropped fast per shot at pw 8. Used my new pump to refill. What a workout!

What was the wind like?

Also, lower pressure and lower power wheel means a lighter trigger and less vibration upon firing. I run pw 0 and 1500psi with kodiak match. Great for grackles and steel target.

Contact Walkonking for a wok but. I have the cheaper version of his and it works great to stabilize your shouldering of the gun. Feels like an ar15.

I can hit a steel chicken at 30 yards off my knee. Bench rested I can put all pellets touching.

Ok. Got my spinlock today. Yes! Started at 2800 psi with kodiaks. Velocity was 885 avg. Shot groups at 50 yd were 1/2 to 1 inch. Then went to JSB 8.44 gr. Ouch! Horrible 3 inch groups. Pressure was down to 2500 or so when I switched to JSB’s. Velocity was around 900. Shot my HW77k right after. It loved JSB 8.44 gr. 1 inch groups easily at 750 fps. Kodiaks were a bit worse at 1.5 inch avg at 610 fps! Was shocked I have a 9 fpe HW77! Never chronied it. More to come as I fiddle with my talon ss 177.

Hey Steve, yup I got the bug again. Started airgunning since my teens with powerline 880 then upgraded to Sheridan then to beeman hw77k then bought a 300s to compete at college level (won natl match in 10 m) then I quit shooting! Went fly fishing for years. Now I’m back and loving it. Can’t wait to hunt with it. I have 6 acres in TX hill country. Tons of squirrels and coons and possums and hogs! Can’t wait to punch a piglet porker when I upgrade to 25 cal. My real passion is long range stuff. I have a complete set of silhouettes that I’ll scatter on the 6 acres for long range (100 plus yds) sniping. I’ll be looking for airgun hunting/shooting buddies in San Antonio area soon.

Hi Airsniper! Welcome to the dark side, or the madhouse as some refer to this forum. I think you are going to really like high pressure air. It yields power and accuracy. Do you hunt? If so, which critters? This is addictive. More power leaves you wanting greater distance…which has you figuring out how to get more power. 😉
