What is a "Crisp" trigger?

I’ve heard the term over and over.

I read in the Pyramyd Air catalog of a Gaylord review that said it was a “crisp as breaking a glass rod”

I don’t get what the first and second stages of a trigger should offer.

I’ve bought the Supersear, so I can adjust it some, but not sure what to adjust it to.

Explanations?

I’ll give that a read. I don’t want to mess with things a lot. I was really looking for the definition and what to look for. For my Talon SS (an older model) I bought the supersear and I have full intention of pulling the safety from it, and likely the condor (because I am, pull, swear, turn it off, aim, fire EVERY time)

If the safety was even like on a Gamo where there is a little trigger above the trigger I think it would be an improvement. How bad is that for a comparison.

I’ll do as you say and see how it feels with the superseer. If anyone has one and a pic of how they’ve set their screws.. 🙂

Triggers that have been adjusted to be too light, or have had their sears stoned/ground/polished too much will discharge when dropped, bumped, or even just on their own. Obviously that’s not good.

Many adjustable triggers have two sears that must be correctly adjusted relative to each other. Over adjustment of either, or both can really screw up the firing cycle to the point of becomming dangerous. Therefore, read all you can about the trigger you are trying to adjust before playing with it. Keep a written record of how many truns and in which direction you have turned a particular screw so that you can go back to where you started. (Work undistrubed.)

If you are asking specifically about an AirForce trigger, there are some characteristics that are peculiar to them. Many AF guns discharge when their safety is released and their owners have disconnected/removed the safety device. My TSS has never done this, but I am waiting for it to happen; always point the gun in a safe direction…but that’s with any gun.

There is a retrofit modification for the AF trigger that is supposed to make it “crisper”. I believe that AF has incorporated this design into their new guns. That is listed here somewhere. I haven’t done it yet as my TSS serves me well as it is. Also, I have other airguns that I use for specific purposes.

If you get a chance to try other higher end guns, AirArms, Daystate, FX, etc., and even a properly set up Marauder, you will know what a good, clean, crisp trigger is.

I wonder how much of this can be achieved with the supersear or the new model trigger…

To me a “crisp” trigger is the following:

A light first stage draw on the trigger until it comes into solid contact with the second state…I can “tap” the second stage lightly when I squeeze through the trigger’s first stage. First stage trigger movement is perhaps 1/4th inch. It can be more, it can be less.

The second stage is a pound or so pull away from releasing the hammer. As I squeeze the trigger past the first stage and make contact with the second stage, the second stage will move no more than 1/32nd of an inch, or less, before it releases the hammer.

During this fraction of an inch movement beyond the second stage, there is no sensation of movement, just a sudden release after the pound or so of pressure is put on the trigger to break through the second stage.

Called the “break”, this tiny movement is almost instantaneous, after the pound or so of pressure is applied. No feel of “grinding”, “crunching”, or roughness of travel of any kind. The trigger breaks past this point crisply, and no time is allowed for the shooter to move or jerk.

A “Crisp” trigger is tight, firm, and you can tell at all times what stage you are in, and exactly when you reach the second stage.

The first stage serves only to allow you to bring the trigger to the very fine point of firing, but holds your finger there until you push past it. This should happen with full knowledge and “feel” to the shooter. It tells you how close you are to releasing the hammer and when it does release, it does so at your command and control, but with very little effort, and zero lag time. The rifle has fired before the shooter can flinch.

A crisp trigger is imperative to shooting accurately.
