New bench and sighting in at 285 yards with the Haley 257

I bought a Caldwell stable shooting table yesterday at Cabela’s to replace the Ford Explorer that my daughter retrieved from me after getting back from Nepal and Cambodia and is using at her mountain cabin outside of Bend Oregon, she has close to 4 feet of snow and needs it more than I do. So I needed something to shoot from and here it is.

I sat it up at 285 yards which is the maximum I can get here on the property. The target is below at the fence line at the base of the large Doug firs, you can see it as a small white dot, which is a 8 inch steel plate, bolted to a 3×4 foot plate and held off the 3×4 plate by a one inch bronze bushing.

This is the view from the target, the bench is at the base of the large tree on the left side of the house, there is 15% incline. It is is really important to have a ballistic chart to get on the money on that 3×4 plate. With a 90 yard zero, I have 85 inches of drop, so knowing where to dial to on the elevation turrent and having enough adjustment to do it is important.

Right now I have just one wind flag, the storms removed the other three for me. But a slight change in wind will move the group a foot.

This is the first group shot at 285 yards was on the plate, I had to then correct for an additional 16 inches of drop and 12 inches of windage.

I measure the correction I need and then divide that measurement by 2.85 to get the MOA adjustment needed.

I am right on now, but need to cast more bullets. I was using only 4000 PSI of air, and that lowers my velocity and my POI of course, so things change with each outing, the POI will even change after going down to paint the target, as the wind changes, as pressure drops, so does the POI.

Right now it is staying at around 5 inches for this range due to wind shifts which are continual.

I know this may seem primitive to many of you, but I am just trying to get by with what I have. 😛
