Using a high quality compressor with shoebox?
I have a very nice Ingersoll compressor in my shop, and it has used synthetic oil from day one. Never any oil contamination, but —-
I posted this on the Yellow. What say you all?

hight pressure oxy. and oil= BLAM!!!, BUT—
Over the years, the detonation in ag’s has been well documented, but here is the thing that confuses me.
Dr. Beeman wrote years ago that a high performance springer chamber. reaches a temp of 5,500 deg. f. for a millisecond when firing. Hence, the detonation if a combustible substance is added to the mix.
We all know the dangers of detonating when Oxygen and oil are mixed. Especially at “High Pressure”. But I have never heard of a case of detonation in a PCP When using high pressure air. Oxygen yes, natural air under pressure, no.
It is talked about a lot on different forums, but no one has ever given an example that I can remember. And we all have tried a mi rid of different lubes on pellets looking for the holy grail of lubes. You would think that it would be a common problem. But, no. Not one single occurrence that I am aware of.
If it is so damned dangerous, why has no one ever had a problem?
I must be missing something here, or else everyone out there assumes by confusing high pressure air with high pressure oxygen.
Anyone here ever heard of a problem with high pressure “AIR” detonation?
Just saying and wondering.
I found a pancake style over at harbor F. that looks fairly good, but it says air use .60 at 90 psi. Every one has told me that the H.F. model I am looking at gives 1.00 at 80. Which if I understand correctly, is what the shoe box recommends.

Who knows. It was written by Beeman. Sorta the t. Gaylord of his day. Some followed his every word like it was from the Burning Bush. 🙄 Others took every thing he said with a huge grain of salt, and a shot of Tequila. 😆

Don’t high performance springer have plastic seals?
Lots of things melt at 5500F, plastic being the first of the many that are involved in springer internals. The duration of the 5500F flash must be EXTREMELY short if it occurs at all. It takes a HELL of a lot of energy to get to 5500F, simple air compression via a lever (not to mention a 5″ max stroke) and a seal that can’t withstand even 1000psi make it hard for me to believe such temperatures are achieved…
But then again we supposedly sneeze at 500mph for an extremely short amount of time. Guess it’s possible… 😉
RC, sounds like you picked a Ford Fiesta to tow your horse trailer. Sure it can do it but not for as long as a F350 will… 😆
We call that “the wrong tool for the right job” in the trade… 😀

Why take the chance Mike, especially since Tom specifically says don’t do it.
Altho I have read where some have just gotten an expensive filter like one they would have used for painting.
I started off with a bottom line HF, I worked it to death, constantly coming on because it was worked to the maximum it could do to supply the right amount of air for the Shoebox and had a small tank. I did not get the warrantee so I screwed myself.
So I sure can’t recommend the little HF pancake.
The replacement was a 6 gallon 1.5 hp 125 PSI with a regulator, so I could turn it down, does not come on nearly as much and has lasted much longer than the little one.
And yeah it was HF so this time I learned and go the warrantee.

I don’t think “synthetic” is any different from regular oil for this use. It is still petroleum base. Perhaps the problem is not that it is explosive, but if you filled a bottle for breathing purposes the oil could phemonia. If my memory from my scuba days is correct. And then again if a drop of oil were to get into the piston of your ShoeBox compressor it might explode there.

knife , i wouldn’t buy another compressor to use the shoe box, i have a automotive painting back ground , 20 + years, and you don’t see oil from a compressor unless it is in terrible shape.
with paint work, you have a least two filters and one at the gun to catch any debris or water or oil if it may be the case, so multiple filters and i think you would be fine with a compressor that is in good shape.
i have a champion compressor with 80 gal tank, that i would use quicker than a little cheaper harbor freight compressor , my big compressor might not come on but twice a day running that shoe box .
i would monitor the filters regularly.and have a system with multiple filters for the high pressure air system alone separate from everything else, and also driers if needed in the set up, which i would most likely need here in fort forth ,
there i a lot of stuff for drier set ups , people run lines Thu refrigerators, or coil line in a ice chest to condense suspended moisture to collect in the traps, and have traps before and after ward, and traps at the end of the lines for running sandblasting set ups in hot climates
but it is what it is, and each to there own.
